Birthday is coming up and I have to stain our house this summer. I have been thinking about an airless sprayer but I notice that I see lots of these things being returned to the home centers and I wonder if they are no good or just prone to guys buying them, using it and taking it back.

House is a 2 story cape cod with attached garage. Rough sawn cedar siding. I did a smaller house with a brush and I remember it to be a real chore. Seems like a sprayer would be the way to go.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions offered.

Ive got a Graco, it set me back about a grand. Its OK, but has its shortcomings. Before that I had a C-H that cost around $250. It worked OK for about a year. painted 2 houses and about 20 rooms with latex. Then it started giving out. The graco is much better, but as with all sprayers, clean up is a chore and if your working indoors, overspray is a big problem. But I can paint the body of a 4k sq. ft. house in about 2 hours. If you only use it once in a while, just rent one, and unless your doing interior comercial painting or new construction.. stick with the old roller for indoors.

The small hand held jobs are no good at painting under the eaves. You have to hold the spayer level. I have a C-H 2/3 horse. The gun was cheap. I would compare those to the Wagners.

They are not very handy for painting indoors unless it's new construction.

It's an hour or 90 minutes to clean one.

You can change paints, primer to paint without cleaning. You might let one sit overnight without cleaning.

A brush is said to have better durabilty.

I've tried a couple of different ones. I've not had much luck with the hand-held variety. I had a Wards 3/4 horse unit that sucked out of a bucket for many years. It sprayed OK but, even when I cleaned it well, I had to futz with it every time I started to use it again. A couple of years ago, I happened on a commercial grade Titan in a pawn shop for about $200. I find all the difference in the world. It works dependable and fast. I put 5 gallons of paint on in 3 rooms of a house I was buying. 3 coats in 15 minutes flat. Garages and exteriors are a snap.

I have both a Wagner quart bottle and a C-H hose type. The C-H is BY FAR the better way to go! You can shoot at least 5 gallons of paint before a re-fill. It does help to strain the paint beforehand, but getting the right size filter/tip is a must. Some paints have more solids than others and require a larger filter in the gum it's self. Prime your gun with just a bit of cooking oil and make sure all parts are well lubed/clean before you start. After you are finished - CLEAN, CLEAN, CLEAN!! Got my C-H through Harbor Freight in 1997, and has had 2-3000 gallons runs through it - I have bought a new gun (because I wanted one), a new return hose (cost about $1 at local hardware store), new suction hose ($3 at local HW store), and a new plunger ($20 through C-H), and, of course, new filters (HD, Lowes, Menards,Ace, Wally, and others). I also got another C-H sprayer for $10 at a garage sale - took it home and works great.

For a birthday I strongly reccomend a bass boat, new pickup or similar.

Rent the sprayer and force a son-in-law paint the house. You go fishin, take a drive, etc!

I have a Wagner airless sprayer that I have used for a few years now. It works very well. I always strain the paint before spraying and use the correct size filter which pretty much eliminates clogged tips. I have extension probably 8 feet which allows you to paint most of the house from the ground. It also allows you to paint much larger areas in a single pass which reduces the overlap problem. Cleaning is also important which some people forget. Have a nice day

Might consider renting one from the homecenter to see how one works, I also have roughsawn siding, when I stained mine with an airless I back brushed right behind it with a 24" soft bristle floor broom to work the stain into the siding

I bought a Campbell Hausfeld 3/4HP about 5 years ago. I use it to paint my barn and it works great. I built a house and used it to do most of the inside painting. It works OK with latex and much better with oil. Tends to clog the filters with oil. These sprayers are a pain to clean so you better have a big job to do to make it worth the trouble. It takes me longer to move the ladder than paint the barn. Never did care for the job from the hand held sprayers.

A neighbor and I have had a wagner hopper type for about fifteen years and it works realy well but is a bit fussy. If it sits awhile the check valve in the bottom of the tub sticks shut and needs to be bumped a bit to loosen it, then it will work O.K. Don't know if you are thinking of the hopper type with a hose or the one quart kind, but if you do get the one with the hose, by all means get the nozzle that can be reversed so it can be cleaned out. That way if the nozzle plugs, and it will, you can just turn the nozzle 90 degrees, squeeze the trigger to blow the plug out, and turn the nozzle back around to the painting position and go to it again. Stain seems to work O.K. without following the sprayer with a brush but it seems like paint still sticks better if it is brushed in right after it is sprayed. Good luck and be careful on the ladder.

Painted a whole barn with a quart hand held Wagoner power painter, along with lots of other things. Used it so much the piston is showing severe wear where it slides into the ceramic cylinder. None of the local stores have replacement pistons. Yeah, they work, but can be fussy when the tips and pistons wear. You do have to be careful about thinning paints, stains, etc. (If you're wondering about the barn, about a quart was all I could spray before having to move the ladder anyway.)
