Does anyone have a favorite brand and supplier of grinding wheels? I mean the 4.5 in wheels for hand grinders. Dewalt is the brand the local farm store carries but I havnt been too pleases with performan or price of those. By performance I really mean how long they last. Think Ill try harbor freight next, atleast if they dont perform well I cant complain about the price. Theyre less than half of the dewalt brand.

Hi Matt,

The best has always been Norton abrasives. Last longer, leave a better overall finish, but cost more than the cheapies mentioned.

What I did was buy Northeren tools 4.5" cheap brand for ruff finish work then use a Norton wheel to finish with.

Makita makes a 5" side grinder that runs at 10000rpm, 5/8"arbor, model 9004 (I think), that beats the typical 4-1/2" grinder all to pieces, Grinds simular to a 7" grinder, 1/2 the weight and cost(about $125), and is a large body grinder making it comfortable to use all day.

Works well with the 4.5" wheels, but a tad small for the 7" wheels unless you neeed the disc surface area for light work. Will handle 7" 36 grit sanding disc easy.

The speed of the Makita grinder improves the finish quality.

Never heard of some of the other brands mentioned so I may have missed trying something better.

Occasionally I get the sample packs from various mfgrs, including Norton. Walter has them beat on the steel grinding wheels, and the cut-off wheels. I might take some flak for this but for al, and ss, Sait make a decent grinding wheel.

Hi BFO,

"I might take some flak for this"

Why for trying to find something better?

I never heard of the Walter or Sait disc's. How about cost when comparred to Norton?

I have yet to find a good quality chopsaw wheel.

Sait are what Praxair stocks on thier shelves, pretty close to 2/3's the price of Walter. I'm paying around $4 Cnd. a piece for a Walter 4 1/2 HP grinding disc. Have no idea what the Norton's are, sorry.

The letter on the wheel denoted the hardness of the stone.Try a different letter. The ones we used to get at work from Harbor Freight were too hard for my liking and they wore out too fast.

After trying all the house brands in an effort to save a buck, I always come back to the Walter HP. Nothing compares, give it a try and get back to us.

We use either Makita or Dewalt and have good luck with them. Use them to sharpen blades. Price is not as important here as safety. Cheaper disc could come apart and no amount of moey saved is worth gettin injured over. I buy the Dewalt at Flea markets for a $1.00 ea., not a bad price.

Not to sound like a Cronatron welding salesman (which I am) but their Zirconia grinding disc are guaranteed to last 7 times longer than the dewalts and welding house brands. It does cost 4 times as much, but you do the math. If it last 7 times as long and only cost 4 times more, it is cheaper in the long run !
