What are the advantages/disadvantages? I have a small compressor 6.6/5.6 CFM @40/90psi. I have found a siphon feed gun that will work, will HVLP guns work at this relatively low CFM? Should I be concerned about CFM for paint guns at all or just assume I have to wait for the compressor to catch up? I know HVLP are more efficient for paint delivery, but for the occaissional backyard hack such as myself, does that matter? Thanks in advance.

Regards, Rick from Paso.

Rick, Don't waste your money on a HVLP gun just for backyard projects. The HVLP guns I have seen are still a siphon feed gun. I have a HVLP gun that has it's own turbine and it does not spray that much better than my $25 flea market DeVilbiss copy. I believe that cleanliness and regulated air is the key to a good spray job. I paid over $700 for my little rig and do like it but I will not buy another one, would probably go for the siphon feed HVLP gun that runs on a regular air compressor. I spray oil base stain and lacquer mostly on 3 or 4 sets of new cabinets a year and a few paint jobs on farm equipment. Johnny

Just a commment regarding state regulations. At present, few, if any states regulate the use of these tools by private parties (Texas, for one, does not). I'm in the environmental business, and I can assure you that you are not regulated unless you have a "business" involving painting. In the future, you may have to comply with certain regulations, but until TNRCC (Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission) tells you to get a permit, they cannot control which gun you use.

1] HVLP is better, more forgiving.

2] No. They need more c.f.m.

3] Yes, be concerned.

4] Yes, it matters. Some states have passed laws about painting with non compilent guns.
