Last fall I purchased a 2N from a fellow that was selling his house. He had a number of items that he had to get rid of and he asked me if I wanted the towbar that he had setting by the tractor. It is the kind that you could rent from U-Haul and is made pretty substantial. Do these have any use with the newer autos, or do I need to find another use for it?

I have one I got from a U-haul in California in 1987. I use it all the time to tow newer cars. Hooks up to my nieces 1994 Taurus in about 3 minutes. Mine does have several "balance chains" to allow it to do this. Grab it - you'll find a use for it.

oh, I don't know. Might be a good use to make a small trailer toung out of. Might be able to adapt the bumper mountings to a frame mounting for one you might want to tow arround. Might use the steel for anothe project. There are several things one could do with it if you use your immagination.

i am not trying to start an argument here by any means but i find it BETTER that older folks tow thier 4x4 or car rather then trailer it. 99 percent of the motor home jockeys are older folks who wouldnt take the time effort to PROPERLY chain the vehicle down or know how. with sealed wheel hubs because of abs on smaller cars and the wheel hub whole assemly is 300 bucks a piece if he wheel bearing goes bad if a car isnt chained down PROPERLY and you tow it quite often you will very easily get flat spots etc on the bearings. alot of older people dont have the knowledge or the energy to crawl under thier tow vehicle and tie it down. another huge reason is in SOME again not all places finding a spot to put a trailer at the rv park is a hastle and hten you got the motor home license the car license and now the trailer too. usally the tow behind rigs are fairly straight forward and easy to hook up. i dont know if i woudl have wanted my 80 year old grandpa tying down a car and towing it across country and trusting it not to fall off the trailer or worse. no offense to older people jsut trying to be realistic. honestly with some of these huge motor homes or these huge 5th wheel hook ups being rv plates exempts them from cdl but really truly i think they hsould be required to have a cdl. or at least maybe not a cdl but require some training. some of those 5th wheel set ups are 40 ft behind the truck and w/slideouts septic tank some water reserve generator they are heavy.

jdman- the guy talking about the old folks towing cars behind their motorhomes wasn't suggesting that they buy a trailer to haul their cars around on.

He said they should use a tow dolly. Which is a device with two wheels that just raises the front of the towed vehicle up, similar to the way they're hooked onto a wrecker/tow truck.

But even with one of these, I agree with your point that it might still be too physically demanding for some to use these. Best bet would be if they got one of those BIG motorhomes like I saw on the Discover Channel that had a compartment in back where you parked your mini-cooper...:)

I bought one back in the early '80's when the rental companies were getting rid of them because new car bumpers cant handle them. I got some use out of it but it was because I had a car with a genuine steel bumper. I dont have that car any more so the hitch has been hanging in my garage for 12 years now. I've been scheming on a way to weld 3pt pins on it so i can use it as a trailer tow bar behind my tractor.

If you don't like the vehicle your towing, they are great. You can pretty well count on damage to some degree. Stay away from it, trailer it. Hound

tow bars were used when vehicals had real bumpers to attach something to.
or you may have one that uses "ears" that will bolt to a specific vehicals frame.
you might be able to contact the manufacturer to find out if it has a specific vehical model intended.
what really kills me is the people that have $100,000 + motor homes and flat tow thier little 4wd or front wheel drive vehicals for hundreds of miles beating the _ell out its drive train for when for $1000 you can buy a tow dolly and save the wear and tear on the vehicals drive train.

Those people usually buy their car specifically because it can be towed 4-down without damage or miles rolling up on the odometer. Unless you are dealing with a classic or antique, tow dollies or trailers are a major PITA. Everything about them is inconvient and people often end up doing substantial damage in the loading/unloading process. Tow bar fittings are now designed for specific models and are about as safe as can be.

The uhaul tow bar is not useable on newer cars find another use for it. if you want to tow a car behind a motor home contact a company specalized in tow bars most cars can be towed but not all they need to be fited whith frame brackets to be towed not off of the bumper. then you need to know if it needs a drive line disconect or trans. lube pump instaled.
