F-150 Sage cont....

My F-150 purchase is turning out to be a bad one. I put a real oil pressure gauge on it and the results are not encouraging. It runs about 45 lbs cold and down to 4 lbs hot. My local mechanic says drop the pan, clean the screen and install a new oil pump. My instincts say I am throwing good money after bad. What is the likelihood that this pressure is being caused by a worn out oil pump and not a bad lower end?

Just my opinion but in the 80's Ford did have oil screens clogging up. I seen this in a garage many times. In fact I even heard of a mechanic, going through the drain plug hole and getting to the screen and opening it up that way, without removing the pan. Chevy 350 engines need 10 pounds of pressure for every 1,000 rpms, If you drive easy, that could last a long time. I'd try a motor flush,and see what comes out. Then change the oil. Good luck.

id try an oil pump not a big deal and not big money. also why you have the pan off plastiguage isnt that expensive just check a couple. if the bearings were it youd pry have a knock esp when it was cold

my grandfather had a 89 f150 with a 302 he had the same prob changed bearings and oil pump still got the same readings decided to drive it till it puked its still going 75000 miles later, i bought the same setup same oil pressure readings are the same as his truck im driving it the way it is no noise so screw that guage sounds normal to have that many trucks with the same prob blame it on those overpayed engineers just my two cents worth

You more than likely have a worn out oil pump. If it were bearings, you would have ome sort of rod or main bearing noise. Not guaranteed though, but should not be real quiet. I had a very good mechanic tell me that Ford uses an aluminum oil pump the late 80s and early 90s 302ci engines. I had a 1992 with a pan gakset leaking, that is when I found out that Ford uses these cheap pumps, put a new pump in it, inspect the lower end and you should be good to go. I had 2 302s with over 200K on them when I traded, ran good, just wanted bigger truck.

I had a 1988 ford ranger that was identical in the problem you are having with your f-150. I did drop the pan, the screen on the oil pump was plugged. Replaced the oil pump, with the anti-cavitation shield removed, and drove the engine for another 150K miles. If you drop the pan, you can see what the problem really is, without doing that, it is just a guess. Good Luck!

more than likely main and rod brgs loose. You might be okay putting in brgs , oil pump , cleaning pick up tube . Be sure to look pan over good , before putting it back on .They are bad for rusting through . not fun job to do in frame though , but can be done . Good Luck Bryan

i agree with dropping the pan and checking the rod and main bearings. that is the most likely culprit. i had it happen on a 1990 ford 6 cyl.

Drop the oil pan, and check out the rod and main bearings. If they're worn, but the crank journals aren't shot, you can roll in new rod and main bearing inserts, and replace the oil pump, probably for well under $100.00 in parts.

LOTS of OILY labor, though!

That SHOULD fix the problem, unless the cam bearings are "toast".

Could be the cam bearings. When they wear the oil pressure drops. Just a possibility.
