How is everyone out there doing with the winter heating bills? I just had my 500 gallon propane tank filled and it cost me $800.00! Ouch! I need to come up with something better. I have two wood stoves and try to keep them running most of the time to offset the high cost of fuel, or it would be much worse. Everything in the house is runs on propane. I live in Michigan and the cost of propane is near $2.00 per gallon. What are the rest of you paying for propane?

PJW,

I went with an outdoor wood boiler awhile ago. You gotta like to cut wood and have wood for one of these suckers, but it sure beats paying all the wallet cabbage for something that don't smell near as good as red oak burning!!!!

Last year we needed to install new heating/Ac in our 1400 Sq ft rambler and we installed an air heat pump with propane backup. To date, we have used 200 gals of propane. The HP works to about 14 degrees before the gas kicks in. The electric bills hasn't been too bad since we are using off-peak. By the time you figure the additional cost of the HP and the rebates, the difference is about $800. This is not expensive of a setup, and yes, we live in Minnesota!

Our lockin price in July was $1.49 a gallon. We rent our tank, this summer I'm going to look into buying it. The supplier is supposed to keep the tank filled, apparently thier formulas aren't very good.I've run out twice this winter, my fault though I should've been watching too. They never let us run out before.

I just changed suppliers this year to the local co-op to get a summer prepay. Locked in 750 gallons at $1.19. Get it when I need it. Right now they are getting $2.05 on a fill. By all means find a supplier that lets you lock in a price.

Hi PJW,

You can always increase the units efficiency on the wood stoves by adding water heating coils in the stack, approx 500º plus, or above the stove top. Careful here as it's very easy to make steam and with steam comes pressure.

It doesn't cost much to make your own hot water storage tank that could hold water for heating from 180º to about 110º for usable heat source.

You could accomplish this with a coil to coil heat exchanger using anti-freeze as the transfer medium which would allow for higher collecting temperatures.

Then use another coil to coil heat exchanger to deliver the heat from the storage tank into the existing air delivery system.

You can also collect heat from a solar collector. The best one I've ever seen was made from two large truck raditors with a piece of 1/4" safety plate glass as the solar trap. Run the water into the bottom of the 1st coil and out to the bottom of the 2nd coil, out the top of the 2nd coil into the storage tank. Total cost about $700 less storage tank if you do your own work.

I am with Bill in TN
I got to do something this summer. I have been looking at a geo system a few years but the up front cost has scared me away. I know I will make it back but it is hard to come up with it all at one time.

I got some propane about a week ago. $2.05 per gallon.

I made my winter purchase for propane in October, so don't know what the current local price is.

I am disgusted at propane wholesalers and retailers since the price of propane on the futures market is about the same as last July.

The chart I've posted a link to shows that propane was 70¢ about July 1, 2004, and is currently about 73¢.

Anyone care to venture a guess why local prices aren't following the same trend, and BTW, who IS making the profit?

Personally I think we all need to think more along the lines of super-insulation and solar heating assistance.

We just had our tank(s) filled last Friday, and the price was 1.20 / gal. The contract price last fall was 1.15, so there hasn't been much of an increase. We use 2 - 500 gal. tanks plumbed together, and always keep one filled.

Don't hope for natural gas..its all most as bad. Gas wells in most every field here (none in mine) but we pay same as California. If you get a pellet stove, look into burning corn. At least you would be buying from farmers.

Thanks for the info. I have been told that natural gas is about 60-70% of propane, (pre-buy prices) Is this true? I remember when I lived in the city about 7 years ago the price wasnt too bad, for a smaller house too. What do wood pellets cost? What does corn cost? How much corn does the furnace use? Fill me in.

I prepaid for 1300 gallons at 1.19/gallon in August. I know the price is about $1.60 or so now. I run my wood stove when I can, but that only cuts the usage of the propane by about 10% or so. I would look into getting a wood pellet stove with auto feed. If the price of propane gets to be $1.90 or higher on the prebuy in a few years I may convert to the pellet stove idea, and keep the propane for the hot water heater only. They wont get natural gas down my road for many years yet.

I have a 1960's vintage oil fired boiler and it costs a little over $300/month to heat my big 2 story brick farmhouse. Talk about OUCH! Hate paying so much to OPEC.

Can't you buy your propane on a contract? I get mine from the COOP, in August they set the price. I tell them how many gallons I want and put 10% down. I pay for the rest when it is delivered. $1.05 a gallon is what I paid.

How do you go about buying your own tank and how much does it cost? Can you just have anyone fill it? Around here it seems the more you use the cheaper it is. Those who conserve get penalized with a higher rate.

RJW: I'm in Kent County, Michigan. We have propane locked in at $1.27/gallon through the winter from Crystal Flash. Also, we don't pay a tank rental, they just gave us a brand new one to use as long as we get our propane from them.

I don't see the point of buying your own tank, unless your supplier charges you for it, or your are going to start your own tank farm.

I wouldn't want 4-5 pigs sitting in my yard, requiring maintenance, etc. I wonder what my homeowners insurance would do if they saw 4-5 propane tanks sitting next to the house?!?!

We own our own tanks with a total capicity of little over 2000 gallon and are still using what we bought in september for .98 a gallon. Owning your own tank is the only way to go. The propane we are using to drive on is still only !.35 as of last week. Tim
