Jack won't pump up

I have an old 2 1/4 ton floor jack, and it takes a whole pump all the way up and down, to move it just a little, it only moves on the last little bit of travel? any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

Here's something you could try, fond it on the net
and saved it. Let us now if it works.

>Bottle Jacks REPAIR
Try this remedy: Close the valve and then pump the jack as high as it will go.Invert it and let it set upside down for a few moments.Then with the jack still inverted,open the valve and slowly push the bottom of the jack all the way down. Trapped air is the culprit here.This procedure allows the air to go to the bottom of the jack where it is then able to escape out the valve.I used to love going to auctions and buy "broken jacks".Then take them home and "repair" them in a couple minutes."Broken " jacks are rarely low on oil.Let me know if this cured your jack problems,bob.<

THANKS Sherwood, I'll try it out and see if it works.I didn't say that, but I already checked the oil level, and the handle was tightnend up, but your idea sounds right, However How do I turn it up side down, since the ram is actually laying horizontally in the frame.Do I hold it up against a wall with the saddle end against the floor? That would actually put the bottle end of the jack up side down. Thanks again!!! I'll try out what you said.

In the case of a floor jack, raise the valve to where it is the highest point of the cylinder so the trapped air will be the first thing to be forced out of the cylinder since the trapped air will rise to that highest point.

Thinks I would do the simple things first. check the fluid level and then bleed the system.
