My grandpa bought a nice Reed-Prentice Lathe but someone had lost the clutch pieces and he never got them. Would anyone know where to get some. Even if a clutch could be adapted, we would use it. It is very nice condition but useless. Any machinists or machine repair guys out there?

What size is your Reed Prentice? I bought a 14" several years ago that originally was on a battleship. I have the manual for it which if memory serves me correctly give the dimensions of all the pieces. If I can be of any help let me know.

I am writing this for my Dad who is looking for a manual for a Reed Prentice Lathe. His clutch went out and he needs info on repairing and settings. If you could help, please reply to the email posted.

Thank you,
Paul Katocs

I've had a 1910 South Bend 13 inch lathe since the late 60s, and the clutch is the device that engages the carriage (sp) to move from the right to the left. The carriage contains the cutting tool that engages the piece of steel that is being worked on. The clutch does not engage/disengage the chuck. That runs whenever the motor runs. The clutch is made of some type of fibrous material that allows slippage when the cutting tool is set for too deep of a cut. Mine has gotten worn in recent years, but just needs a bit more cranking on it when it gets bucky, plus a bit more of a slap to disengage it at the end of a cut. I've never had mine apart, but I wouldn't be surprised if the disc was made out of leather, considering its age- before modern materials.

By the clutch, I assume it is a lathe where motor runs all the time & you engage spindle by a lever. There is a web site in the UK... Lathes... that might have some info Reed Prentice was/is owned by a company by the name of Package Machinery Inc. But it has been many years since they built any lathes. You might try posting on the pages of Home Shop Machinist, there are lots of lathe folks there.
