how to convert winch

Is it possible to rig up remote switch (in line) on 12 volt winch. My winch is bolted in all weather steel box with circular switch on one end of winch which is diffcult to reach. Any ideas?? Switch is two way.

Thanks to all who replied, it is very much appreciated. I can't believe I have gone to the YT site every night for four years and just found this Tool site last week. By the way the weather proof steel box is not mouse proof as they ate my operator's manual. I will post final outcome.

I have the set up that was talked about below. It is a superwinch "Freedom Switch." It works great for me.

There are two of them offerred. You would need the one with the solenoids.

you could buy one high current automotive contactor, like the ones on the starter motors, and use it to make and break your +12v connection to your winch. 2 small wires to turn the contactor on and off with a simple toggle switch, this is the remote part. Keep the switch on winch intact as that will be used to select forward and reverse, the remote switch will be the start and stop.

Contactor = relay, but much higher current rating, shop around could probably get one for $10-15. If you find a double pole contactor then can break both +, - lines, but not neccessary and harder to find. or rip it off an old starter motor :)

I can't remember which one it is, either WARN or Ramsey I believe, but one of them has a kit you can get that will transform the winch to a radio remote control and completely eliminate the need for a control cable. Like the one post stated though in order to do this you have to have the electric solenoids to use this type of setup, not just a high amp manual switch which sounds like what you currently have. It's been a while since I saw the kit but I believe it came with the solenoids and all. If not they can be bought through NAPA, Grainger, or who ever. Good luck.

Your winch may have just a hand operated heavy spring loaded mechanical switch for the only control of 12V+ or 12V- to forward,reverse or stop. A heavy pair of interlocked relays will be required in the motor's input circuit. It will be cheaper to purchase a winch with remote operation than convert the existing unit.

Just an idea, I don't have much experience with winches. Would it work to remove the existing switch, wire a long electric cord into the motor, and then attach the switch to the end of that cord? I would think that you could make the cord any length desired. Just an idea.

Only if the winch has relays, if it is a direct rotary switch with large high amp contacts as buickanddeere stated it would have to be large wire to be able to carry the high amp load. You really need a control circut with relays to go any considerable distance. My winch a 8000 Ramsey has a 40" control cable to the remote, I can winch something onto my 30" gooseneck and ride it up if I wanted. I put a new cord on my remote made out of a blue 50" extension cord.
