What breaker for 230 volt 225 amp AC 125 amp Dc lincoln

going to buy a welder of this size, garage has 30 amp breaker on the 230 volt plug. Does it need a larger breaker and larger wires to the outlet box?
Box is located next to the service box, This installation came with my new house thanks for the help in advance

I am a licensed electrician. Good advice has been posted. The National Electrical Code (Article 630)permits downsizing wire for low duty cycle welders because the wire has a chance to cool just as does the welder. Too much info to include here. Follow the manufacturers instructions. The safety of those instructions is considered along with the hardware in the granting of UL or other safety listings. Sounds like this might be in your garage. Let me beg you to never weld in the garage or basement-not in the house at all! I personally know two men who burned down their house while welding. I have my welders in a building away from the house.

I have a AC 225 Lincoln. The 30 Amp will
carry you to about 100Amps welding but there's
a chance you'll trip the breaker on a continuous
weld. The specs with my welder recommends 60Amp
which is sufficient to 225Amp in less than 100Ft.

Another factor is service distance to your utility. They tell me, (and I haven't looked in my electrical book), that there's a 10% loss in a 100ft. So you may not get the 100 Amp mentioned if your line is too long. If your not sure about the
volt drop, up the gauge of your service wire. That would be a #8 instead of a #10 for your 30Amp
service. That should make up for your service loss.

I am exactly 100Ft from my house panel
and I have a 40Amp breaker. It will sustain a continuous weld at 150Amps without tripping, but
I imagine that I'm at the limit.

You'll need quite a hefty service wire to
carry your 60Amps if you want to go max. I forget
the gauge but I imagine it would be something like
a #6 wire.

Make sure you break at the source panel. Any short in your underground service or overhead will be caught at the breaker.

I happen to have an electrical guide next to me, #6 wire is good for 50 amp circuts acording to it. That's as big as they get. #8 is 40 amps, #10 is 30 amps.

Since very often you end up with at least lights, and grinders & more stuff by a welder, you probably do want a 60 amp, with good thick wiring to it.

Ret , T-Bones post was not yet on the board when I was doing my reply. I agree with him on putting in a 100 amp service box. Just so happens to be that I'm pulling one out of my shop next spring.It's a 2 year old , 100 amp , GE box. The only reason I'm pulling it out is that I'm putting a 200 amp box in , so that I can run power to my new house, which should be going in next spring/early summer. Where abouts do you live? I'll give you a heck of a deal on it.

ret my man, since your service is close, you sould go with a 100amp box. If nothing more than safty. Use a 50amp breaker and a box that is big enough for extras. In my mind while your doing this I would wire my old service into the 100amp box. Going to the welder I would use #2 wire and proper conector. Safty and fire are aways a concern!! Bill

Ret , I'm not guessing. I have two of these welders.Lincoln 225 AC/DC + -. I bought them both new. It calls for a 50 amp breaker. For a 50 amp breaker , you would want a #6 wire.

Hi ret, Yep you need to change the service OR run another dedicated circuit for the welder plus (my choice). Why? Your right there next to the main feed so it'll be easy to do and I would consider putting in a 100amp for any futher add ons you "will" aquiring in the near futher! 100amp boxs are fairly cheap, but pick one with the most popular breakers, Square D, Copper feeds only and room for addiontal circuits. Get thin breakers so you can get more into one box!

Maxmium breaker is 125% of duty amps found on the welder or other equipment.

A couple cases of beer buy alot of proffessionl help for this type of job or trade what for you do best.

The plug will tell you which to use. A clothes dryer usually has a 30 amp plug (three evenly spaced prongs), the welder will probably have what looks like an oversized two-prong plus ground plug for a 50 amp circuit.

My guess would be a 50 amp breaker but It should
tell you right on the welder itself or in the
manual.

O BOy, this is what I like about this board, good answers. I have a 200 amp service so no problem here. I paid a little extra to have the elect. wire in the extra circuit and thought it was a 50 amp, that is what it was in Ca, but he put in a 30 in Va. Think I will leave it and have a 50 put in THANKS again.
