Need software to change a scanned photografic negatives into a positive print. I have boxes of old farming negatives that need printing.

Thanks for the feedback, I was just trying to save some time maybe I"ts about time to clean the darkroom,buy some fresh chemicals and do it the right way.

Friend of mine who usually buys quality, bought a Nicon slide and negative scanner for around $400. He said he has been pretty happy with it's quality. He uses the scanner to reverse the image.

Was gonna post one he sent me from a color slide, but it's about 5 meg in jpeg. Appx 6000 x 4000 pixels. Pretty high resolution.
Too bad. It's a pic of a 56 or 57 Chevy Suburban Carryall in the weeds :)

Sorry for running on, but got curious.
I used a program named EasyThumnails to reduce that 5 meg to appx 400x260. Still looks pretty good.

Have you considered taking them to a photo lab (or drugstore lab or whatever) and asking them if they can print them for you? If you want digital, many of those places will put them (photos, not the negatives) on a photo CD for you at a little extra cost. If you figure in your time to do this job, it's probably well worth the cost.

I assume your negatives are black & white? I got into a project last year for a living-history museum and we had a pile of negatives to work with, some color, some black & white, and also some postive slides. My experience with the matter is thus - but I haven't looked recently so things might be easier and cheaper now. We tried several scanners advertised as having capability for scanning negatives. One was marketed JUST for negatives and used a special filter and backlight. My experience with all of them was bad. The scans were crap with negatives. Positive slides scanned well. But . . . they were low end machines - all under $200 apiece. There were a couple available in the high end range - around $1000 that might have worked a lot better - but don't know, didn't get to try them. I'm a low-end sort of guy. Now, if you already have the negatives in digital form - most photo editing software easily converts a negative to a positive IF it's black & white. If your negatives are color - it's not so easy. Finding direct opposites for colors is not as easy, so, at least when we were doing it last year, it was a fairly complicated, multi stepped affair. If someone out there has recently bought or used a low end machine that does a good job on scanning negatives, I'd like to know about. Same goes if anyone has come across an editing program that has a one-step feature for changing color negatives into postives.

You apparently have a scanner that will scan slides, negatives, etc. The software that came with the scanner should allow you to do anything you want with them. If you don't have such a scanner, I have been using an "Epson Perfection 3170 Photo" flatbed scanner with good results. (Sounds like a tool to me!) The 3170 has been replaced by the 4180 which has even higher resolution and sells for about $175 to $200.

Most desktop photo editing software will do that conversion.
