Question? A block and tackel using a three pulley block on each end,how much pull will you gain? M0st I have seen are only two pulley blocks. I would like to make one. Thanks for your answers.

In theory the more pulleys the more gain. However,in practice friction begins to eat up the gain. Way back when . . . Dad was setting up a system to use in butchering. He tried 2x2, 3x2, 3x3. He finally used 2x2 because the drag of the rope was excessive in the larger arrangements.

Count the number of strands actually supporting the pulley that the load is attached to, that is the theoretical MA. And the amount of friction due to the rope, and pulleys can be a significant amount too! Ever try a chainfall? They work by the differental in size of pulleys - had one once, and the only way to figure the mechanical advantage was to compare the distance traveled by the input chain and the distance the load moved. Had a bunch of high school students stymied by that one for a while!

To add to Georges' input, you can have up to 64 parts of line. After that many, any more and you are loosing lifting capability.

B Fisher,

Count the number of parts on the

moveable block, that is the number of times

the the pull is increased less friction. 6 times

if the line used to pull is on the fixed block,

7 if line used to pull is on the moveable block.
