Electronic vs. Magnetic Ballasts

I recently was given some very nice 8' florecent fixtures from a friend. They are a little on the old side (guessing late 70's) so I figured I should update the ballasts with something more energy efficient(the old ones were rated at 4.5 amps). I replaced the old ballasts with new, good quality magnetic type. What I noticed is they make a lot of noise. If I switched to electronic, would they be quieter?

Thanks,
Eric

New flourescent fixtures cost the same or less than a replacement ballast. Watch out for ballast ratings. The bronze or no lable is noisy, runs hotter, fails sooner and has a terrible power factor. The silver and then gold labels are superior. An ordinary magnetic ballast can't strike the arc in a lamp below about 40-50F. Cold start ballasts are big bucks. Electronic ballasts are far superior.

Kinda pricey but that is their claim to fame, no noise. Magnetic ones are quite noisy. The few electronic ones I've "heard" were silent.

When you say noisey, I assume you are talking about what a person can hear. I have these electronic ones in my shop at the farm. They really screw up my radio reception, perhaps that's noisy of a different sort.
