Anybody know anything about an Atlas lathe, good bad or ugly? A guy at work has a 10" F-series one for sale for $500.00 including some tooling. One of the gears for the feed screw is bad. I suppose parts are imposable to find? The manual he had for it was dated 1946. It was made by the Atlas Press Co. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have an Atlas 10" lathe and I would have to say that I'm quite satsfied with it. It is a bit on the light side, but if you are willing to go slow you can do larger pieces. If a part or accessory was not redelly avalable, I would attempt to make it myself.

Atlas is a light duty lathe.. but OK for hobby or light shop use... 500 is not a bad price if in good shape with tooling. I have 3 small Southbends sitting in a building, I am probably going to part them out... hate to, but they will bring 3 times as much as selling whole. SB threading dials are going for 150+ now.....

I don't think parts are impossible to find, but you may be able to replace the gear with a standard change gear available from a Browning or Boston gear supply. Or you can remove the broken section of gear, silver solder in a new, blank section, and remill the teeth if you have access to a mill or a friend with one.

I just bought a 12 inch from a fellow that worked for Clausing in Battle Creek, Michigan where they were made. Clausing and Atlas same except name plate according to him. He repairs them up to the largest that I've seen. Hine Machine, Hastings,Mi. The one I bought is like new.
