Plumbing shop for air

I have done my reading and know the positives and negatives of galvanized, copper, pvc, black pipe, etc. for air.

I have decided to go with 1/2" galvanized-fits my needs the best. Basically I am looking at 40x50 loop with approximately 8-10 "drops".

I haven't however done ANY work in the past with galvanized pipe-or basically anything other than PVC...so total rookie here.

At this point I have 3 questions:

1) What tools will I need other than a pipe threader, cutter (or hacksaw), files, and a pipe vise?

2) What do you recommend to seal the joints when using galvanized for air?

3) Relatively speaking is this going to be pretty straightforward or are there a lot of hidden "gotcha" factors?

Any input would be much appreciated!

The drawing also shows one of the more important ways of doing things. The drops come out the top and then down. Greatly reduces water and crud build up.

Wow, you guys are full of great information, looks like I posted that question to the right place.

Thanks especially to the guy who posted the link to the diagram-very helpful.

I think I have a little more planning to do before I acutally start....no doubt you all saved me from a couple mistakes.

Go for it you will be fine. I used 3/4 inch galvanized pipe. From compressor to line use a flex hose at first. I use hyd hose then your pipe. I have shutoff valve above each 50ft hose connection and straight below it also. This allows you to release your rollup hose pressure. bottom valve drains. I have this on every hose rollout. I done away with the drain petcocks on bottom of compressor tank also and hook air hose direct into the outlet. This line I run to outside area of shop and it also keeps the moisture out of tanks as every time you use this line the water sprays out also. I have two 60 gallon tanks hooked together on this line. Good luck and it is not hard just takes some time. Give me a shout if you need some other ideas. Mine gets used usually 7 days week, its handiest thing in the shop. Runs 1 to three impact wrenches a day.

Be sure that you have a slope in the lines to drain water, with a way to exhaust the water out of the lines. Use teflon thread tape on the pipe joints, use regulators on the lines, use coil hose for the drops, use plenty of pipe hangers. Dont use any plastic PVC fittings for compressed air. Good Luck

Did that a number of years ago in my shop. Used Black Iron. Extremely handy. Although I find I use only about four couplers.

As mentioned earlier make sure to use drip legs to collect condensate. I put them in at all points where the pipe went up or down, ie over doors etc.

Tools to use are as you mentioned with these comments. Definatly use a pipe cutter makes starting the threader easier. Might want to use a reamer to take the inner burrs off. As earlier I used Rectorseal for sealant works well when you are doing a lot of plumbing.

One more comment I would make. Seriously consider putting some couplers outside in strategic locations. These will need their own drip legs out side also. I put one in the storage side of ours and when we use it it is indespensable. Wish I had put one by the main door also.

Cut and fit your own pipe!! Tools aren't that expensive or can be rented maybe borrowed where you buy the pipe. If you have the hardware store do the cutting and threading you will be spending all your time on the road.

I have done some work with galvanized steel, black steel, copper, and various plastics. The plastic pipes are easiest and cheapest, but apparently are not the best setup for air lines, because of the explosion hazard. I think soldered copper is a lot easier to work with than the threaded steel pipes. And when I plumbed my shop for air, copper was a little cheaper than the steel pipe and the necessary fittings.

I used 1 inch copper for my main line, to allow for pleanty of airflow capacity and also for surface to cool the compressed air. I gave the main line a fair slope and a large condensation collector with a valve at the lowest end. The main line goes around 3 sides of my shop, with valved and drip looped quick connectors set up in various places. The condensation connector works great, although I have found that I need to open up the valve if it really freezes in the shop--the first one cracked when it froze. I used 50-50 solder on the joints, which I think is a lot easier to use than the kind of solder you are now supposed to use on drinking water pipes.

Using copper makes it easy to repair or modify your system if you want or need to. You can just cut it and solder in a new fitting rather than having to disassemble a whole lot of threaded joints, which can be a real bear!

I installed my shop air last fall using 3/4 black iron. It's about as easy as connecting garden hoses in order to water the far end of the lawn, nothing hidden and no gotcha's if you plan out the runs ahead of time. At the joints I used the soft set Rectorseal. I have had bad luck with the hardening Rectorseal, braking pipes or fittings when I've wanted to add or change out a fixture. Seems the hard set, although it is a great sealant and has been around for years acts more like a glue when ever I've come across it. One thing I might suggest for sure, is to install more than one drip leg and at each drip leg spend the bucks and add a shut off valve at the top of the leg. In that way you wouldn't need to recharge the whole system each day or after constant use. Oh yes, one other thing, make a provision for a hose reel near the vehicle door for those times when the shop is full and the wife or daughters truck has a flat in the morning. I suppose you've discovered the many different configurations of quick disconnects are not interchangeable.

I would be sure to use drip legs on those drops. You put a tee in line at the bottom of the drop and run your supply out the front of the tee. Then add a short nipple to the bottom with a cap (I used a reducing bushing and a petcock). It lets water and other junk drop down past your air hose and keeps it out of your tools. HTH

I would put a few unions in so you can take it apart here and there if you want to/need to in the future without taking the whole thing apart or sawing a pipe in two. Also I would put a few Ts in it here and there so you can add to it or branch off. Never tell when you want to put in an outside outlet, another drop, or extent it to an addition. Use a T inplace of an elbow, just plug the extra outlet. Use a T inplace of a coupling. If you put in extra unions, use a short nimmle and put in a T before you go on.

If you still have an older type hardware store nearby they will cut and thread to length for a very reasonable price, at least ours does. Measure the fittings and allow for thread depth for any critcal runs then start in the corner so any miss measuring just causes the end of the run to be off a bit. The std "pipe dope" they sell works fine for air. You will need a couple pipe wrenches, 12"ers will due nicely but an 18" is nice to have around too for later projects. If you like tools buy a ratchet head threader, a set will be cheaper than individual parts as a rule. Ridged brand is allways good, there may be others. Crooked ends dont seal as well and dont start very east either, get a pipe cutter. Again Ridged is my brand of choice.

I did almost exactly what you want to do about 3 years ago, my loop is about 30 by 30 in my work area with another 60 feet in an adjoining room. Contrary to some other recommendations I have read, my line slopes down and away from my compressor, some people recommend that the water drain back into the compressor, I have a drain at every drop. Although I drain the compressor every day, I don't want the inevitable crud in the lines draining back into my compressor tank. I would recommend that you go with 3/4 diameter to lessen pressure drop. 1/2 is ok for the drops. I used normal plumbing sealer for the joints. No major leaks. I turn off the switch to my compressor if I am not using it, but if I leave it on all day, it might come on once an hour or so due to leaks. No big deal. Really no gotchas, except allow about 3 times the amount of time you think it will take to do it.

You are doing it correctly. An air line that is subject to condensation should always slope down in the direction of air flow - never the other way. No matter what anyone else says. That's not only applicable to air flow but any flow where a two phase situation may exist. The reason is to promote drainage of condensate, not restrict it. Whenever the flow of condensate is opposite the flow of air, the condensate flow is no longer free draining and is restricted not promoted. A professionally designed system will always follow this criteria. That's why you see it that way at the Sharp web site - down in the direction of flow.
