I have seen a circular saw in a tool catalogue it has a 173 mm dia blade and they say it will cut 3 mm to 8mm sheet steel. Has anybody had any experience with one of these saws? if so please reply.

Steelmax Circular Metal saw is the best in reply to steph, 01-20-2005 11:25:52
on the market.
It cuts 1/2" like a wood (rated for 3/8") and we have cut 2" anchor iron with them. It also bevels and has 4 blade options.
The saw sells for $369.99 (US) and the blades are 47.99 to 65.99.
Cronatron welding systems sells it.

I agree with Joe. We have one at work and it has been a favorite tool of everyone that has used it. It will cut most any metal material, plate, pipe, angle or tubing within its range of cut. We have cut thin material with it but it will snag and bend too thin of material. What you do then is sandwich it in scrap plywood and it cuts just fine. Leaves the sooothest finished edge you ever saw. I flat stock, cut a miter on a bevel, flip one piece over and you have a grooved joint ready to weld. And the cut metal is cool to the touch. Cuts with no sparks. The blade is designed to transfer all the heat to the chips. I have seen the saws listed in a Milwaukee catalog for around $300.

Our company has several of these saws. They are made by Jancy Engineering and the saw is called the "Evolution" and uses a carbide-tipped saw blade of special design. It's just like a standard circular saw in operation but obviously made for tougher duty. Cutting 1/8" and 1/4" floor (diamond) plate is just like cutting plywood. The saw will also cut angles and other shapes provided the thickness is around 1/4". The saws are slicker than snot on a pump handle for cutting expanded metal. A saw of this caliber will run you $500+.

In answer to your question it may have something to do with the blade design. If the distance between the teeth was less than the minumum thickness they said it would cut it might grab and stall the saw or kick back and hurt something or somebody. I know with a wood saw it doesn't matter that much because the wood is "soft" and forgiving where metal isn't. Usually with metal cutting blades rule of thumb is you always want at least two teeth in contact with the material at any given time to prevent it from grabbing and binding between the teeth. Just a thought....

It is using mms.MMs will only work in a metric country. You must find one that cuts inches not mms. What gauge does it cut?
