OT Price for a half a Cow

How much are you Paying for a Half a cow,Butchered and wraped? My wife bought one for $700. here in Michigans Thumb, is this a decent price?

We charge $1.60 per actual pound of meat and the butcher we use charges $0.30 per pound for a total of $1.90 per pound. Figure a half is between 300 to 400 lbs and you are right there. We sell both beef and holstein and there is a difference in the meat. Compare this to the store and it is a steal, maybe not for the burger but have you seen the price of a nice steak lately? $1.90 wouldn't even get you a piece of the fat off it! And I can guarantee our beef, what are you getting from the grocier? Oh, this is in extreme northern IN. Location may make a difference on price and meat quality. Not sure some of the steers out west could compete with the steers from this area.

We just got a half and payed 2.00 a lb cut wraped and frozen. All we had to do was pick it up

Are you taking into account that the whole thing isn't made in to hamburger. That some steaks and roast would run 3 to 4 dollars a pound. six felet mignon 5 oz. 70.00 for usda choice. I'll never go back. I perfer holstien, very spoiled diary cows. Has anyone ever thought about sell this on ebay. You would have to get a license?

My neighbor usually does that to calves he raises. This time he decided to sell it and find his meat at the super market on sale.

Calf weighed 756 and brought .90 per lb. ($680 - $25 sales expenses) Wise choise. Personally, never knew what to do with those leg bones.

For you let's look at some numbers based upon numbers from personal experiences.

If you got what Safeway Food Stores used to specify, you got a 1000 lb steer. He was raised on grass and spent 30ish days in the feed lot improving the marbling.

Say he dresses 55%. Now you have a 550# carcas. Split down the middle = 275 lbs. Say the side dresses 75%. Now you are at 206.

$700/206# = $3.39 per pound. I guess in today's market that is not outrageous.

Sounds pretty good to me. That would be $1400 for a whole steer. I say some 10 weights sell for 84 cents today so figure a live price of in the $900's. Processor here charges $150 to kill and prep, 16 cents pound to cut and 16 cents a pound to package. That gets you right to $1400.

If it's good meat, not bad. Grocery store prices are relative. I sell beef for my father, he is in southern Michigan, I am in western Michigan. Pasture raised, about 18-20 months old, average $400 for a quarter. 180-190 pounds hung, and about 100 pounds in the freezer. If your wife got good beef she did alright. If she got good beef, you'll never want to go back to the grocery store meat counter!

How much meat did you bring home? Figure out how much meat you brought home and then how much per pound. Then compare with store prices. At todays prices, unless you had a real little steer, don't sound too bad. Now if you actually got a cow and not a steer, that price sound s little high, a cow can be a little tough.
