My grandfather had a post vise. It is 3 1/2' tall with "100" stamped on the 6" jaws. It is hand forged from single pieces of steel and weighs 100 pounds. When would it probably have been produced and by who and what color?

Jimmy, These blacksmith post vises sometimes called a leg vise, were not a finely finished item. Their overall crude look leads many to believe that they were hand forged. Repairs done over the years may have been forged by hand. The vises were made by dozens of companies, the 100 stamped on it tells me it was probably factory made. Some of the smaller companies could of forged the parts. color? If they were painted at all, would of been black, dark industrial green, or dark industrial red, this is what I've found when taking the rust and grease off.

I've run across a few of these over the years and it has always been my impression that they were handmade by each blacksmith for his own individual use. Other handmade ones I've seen use a piece of hardwood for the "post".
