I got an old Pioneer P-50 it needs the flywheel nut and it is left-hand thread. I figured that its not a common nut so the hardware store probably wont have it. Does anybody have one or know where I can get it? It is a 9/16" nut.

Greg:

Try McMaster-Carr Supply Co.

Sales & Customer Service: 562-692-5911
Internet: www.mcmaster.com

Full 3280 page catalog with 340,000 items is available in PDF with a good index and search engine at the net site.

I'm looking at (paper) Catalog 106, page 2803 to 2806. Lots of LH nuts there in a wide variety of sizes & materials.

McMaster sells to anyone, no minimum order, takes credit cards over the phone and ships same day. Shipping charges are billed at actual. You can buy over the net, by fax, or by phone. They are real helpful by phone. Will even help locate items they don't stock!

Phone # above is their west coast (Santa Fe Springs, CA) headquarters facility. They have others. Look on the net site for one nearer to you.

Hope this helps,

JerryB

p.s. No, I don't work for McMaster-Carr. Just a very satisfied customer.

I don't know where you live, but most towns with any size have either/both a fastner supplier or an industrial supplier. Left-hand threads, while not standard, are not all that uncommon. Is the size you mentioned the thread size or the wrench size?

Check with lawnmower shops and (obviously) some places that service chainsaws and other small equipment. It may not be a standard item in terms of the typical hardware, but you gotta think it's not that uncommon for small engine applications. I'm pretty sure some of the old Briggs&Stratton engines that used a rope for a starter had left-hand threads on the crankshaft. I have no idea what size they were.
Good luck!

You can buy left handed taps and make your own or a machinist can make you one if you don't come up with an easier way.
