Removing broken roll pins from a blind hole?

Anybody out there know of a trick or tip or a tool to get broken roll pins out of a blind hole? I have two 1/4 " pins broken off flush with the surface. No way to push them from the other side. Hard to drill. Thanks for any help..... Dean

Thanks for the ideas fellas.... I was able to use a small die grinder bit as Davis suggested. It was time consuming but still cheaper than 375.00 crosshead. Thanks

I am lucky to have an EDM to burn stuck things like that out, but only if part will fit in the tank. About the only other way I can get them out is to use a 1/8 dia. carbide burr in a die grinder & patiently grind out the center of the roll pin until only a shell is left. It should be easy to pry out then. I have seen some people try to drill them, they always snag & break the drill, then they really have a problem. Regards, Davis

Do yourself a favor and buy a set of roll pin punches.I have a set of Matco.Mac and Snap On sell them too.They work absolutely great.No more messed up roll pins.

Tim, I believe I'd try to get a little heat on the pin to soften it. They're a hard, springy steel. My experience has been to heat the pin to anneal or soften it, and then go in and tap it with a 10-24 machine screw tap as deeply as possible and then slide hammer it out. Hope this helps. Jim.

I've seen people put grease down the center then put a small punch down the center of the pin and tap it. The hydraulic pressure of the grease will force the pin out.

Use a TIG welder and weld a wire to it then jerk it out with a slide hammer. Rack and pinion steering gears have a solid pin holding the threaded tie rod retainer caps in place. This welding trick works well for that application.

Those roll pins are generally a little hard. I have used sheet metal screws to remove them in a blind hole. Got to be patient.

Dean,
I have had some luck with using a screw threaded into the center hole in the roll pin. Run the screw in part way, then work the pin out with pliers. If the pin is large enough, you might try to thread it with a tap and use a bolt instead.

If you can get a drill in there, you can get a punch in there...get a punch the same size as the hole and punch it out. A punch is the only good way to remove a roll pin. If in assembly they were able to tap it in you should be able to tap it out.

ELECTRODE:
Cronaweld 333 (Cronaweld Eagle 3330 can also be used

DIAMETER/AMPERAGE SELECTION:
The following chart provides technical information to
insure successful stud pulling techniques.
AMPERAGE SETTING:
Due to variations in welding power supplies, set-ups etc.,
a test of the amperage setting should be done on a piece
of scrap steel. Set the welding power supply for the
amperage given on the chart, then adjust the amperage
control as necessary to assure a stable arc while maintain-ing
a very short arc length.
PRE-WELD PREPARATION:
The ground cable should be firmly attached to the work-piece.
Position the workpiece in secure and stable man-ner.
It is preferable to position the work piece so that
welding will be done in the flat position with the elec-trode
held vertical. The welder should insure that a com-fortable
and balanced position can be maintained during
the procedure.
