Drilling around magnets.

I have removed the super strong magnets out of a computer hard drive. They are bonded to backing plates that I wish to drill some holes in for mounting purposes.

Any idea how to keep the cuttings off of the magnets or remove them afterward? I doubt blowing them off with compressed air will do the cleaning.

I've thought of placing tape over them before drilling, but really don't think that will work because of the odd shape of backer.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I use Saran Wrap or something a little heavier to cover magnet. When I am finished,I just peel away plastic. Strong magnets need a heavier film, or at least several layers.,

Years ago, I acquired a MRI machine at a surplus sale. I disassembled the machine for the refrigeration system. Also I removed the MASSIVE magnets. I epoxied a strip of wood to the back of the magnets. They are great fer dragg'n around after roofers git done. (grin)

Also I use one of the magnets to drag on the bottom of a creek to find things.

They had a little incident with the brandnew MRI machine being commisioned at SunnyBrook Hospital in Toronto. While MRI was energized for one of the first few times. One of the cleaning staff either couldn't read, didn't read or didn't see the warning signs. As they mopped the floor the mop took off on it's own and was stuck to the MRI .

Heat and vibration will ruin a magnet so proceed with caution.

I have done this by coating with grease then rub the grease off with a good quality disposable shop rag and leather gloves. Then wash with WD-40 and blow off with air. I found old speakers have good magnets with a metal casing on them that you can drill and tap also.
