Hi Ken, Magparticle only detects, defects within 1/16" of the surface. So any crack or flaw deeper than 1/16" and below the surface goes undetected. The cost is about $50.

The only true way to see completely thru steel is x-ray. With x-ray the thickness to be x-rayed determines the price. Any Non Destructive Testing (NDT) Company that checks welds can x-ray any type of steel.

Die-penterant is another surface check method within 1/32" of the surface. You clean the area then spary on the penetrator, then spray on the devoloper and if there's a surface crack it shows up as a red defect.

basicly they take your block attach an electro magnet to it and dust the block with metal dust. North and south poles are established at a crack and the dust lines up giving a clear indication of the crack which may not be seen by the naked eye. As to how much I have no idea. Neal
