Hi Am attaching a Link to some pics of A bunch of Dies that I got in a box of Goodies that I got at an Auction Some time ago.. Have asked several people if they knew what they were made for but no one has come up with a good answer yet..
They range in size from about a 6/32 up to 7/8" and the 7/8 is Left hand (the only one) I use them occasionaly. in the Lathe They work good and cut nice threads.. Cannot imagine what the Holder for them would be like as each one is different size. most are unmarked with size.. Any Ideas??

Turret lathe tooling. These were also used on drill presses to turn OD threads. They took the place of having to single-point if you didn"t have a lead-screw. Smaller lathes didn"t have the screw so you had to put these in a floating holder that would allow some inaccuracy in the feed and alignment as the threads were being cut. I ran a Warner-Swasey turret lathe(s) for a number of years and we had graduated from these to die-heads that held individual thread chasers. The machine shop that I am working at now recently scrapped a whole bunch of TL tooling when they tossed the lathes. It kind of made me sad to see them go. They were good machines and gave me my entry level job in a sales and marketing career. Probably some Chineese guy running them today.

Time moves on I guess.

I think these dies were meant to be used in a turret lathe.....

Hi Carol,

You need to link directly to the picture .jpg file. Instead, you linked to the album file which is a .html with several picture thumbnails. That's not a .jpg and is why your picture did not show up. Here is one view of your dies:

I haven't seen anything like them. Hopefully someone will know how they were used.

Not sure what they would be for. The longer length makes me think pipe dies, but most look far too small for a pipe.

Do they all have the hole through the side? Maybe they use a piece of rod like a T handle rather than having a universal holder.

There is only a hole in one side of each one does not go thru so you could use
like a t handle.
