I am thinking about getting a sds hammer drill. Does anyone know the difference between sds and sds plus. I see some will take the sds plus bits. They also have sds Max which is a much bigger machine. I can see the max has a much thicker shank. Just wondering about the difference between the sds and the sds plus.

SDS Plus bits will work in an SDS drill, the other way won't. The SDS Plus has two additional slots cut in the bit to provide an additional surface to rotate the bit. The chuck has corresponding tangs so the old style bit will not fit. If you forsee a lot of use, the Plus should make bits last a while longer but you lock yourself out of buying old, cheap bits.
