Reddy Heater acting up

I have a 55,000 BTU Reddy Heater that is only about a year or so old. Last year it worked fine but we started using it the other day and it will run fine for about 20 minutes then shut off an give off a big puff of smoke. I watched it and it starts to miss then the flame gets smaller and smaller and goes off. It then will not come back on until you unplug the cord and plug it back in. Then it starts the same cycle again. It will not come back on by itself. It has a built in thermostat that seems to have no effect on the run time. Anyone else had this type of problem or know anything about these little heaters. Thanks for all or any info

my 150,000 was doing that and the screen filter coming up from the fuel tank was clogged , lucas

Chris, if you find you need any parts, these guys are great to work with. I ordered a new ignitor for my 115,000 btu unit, it was in my mailbox 3 days later.

I only run kerosene in mine now, It wont fire on diesel very well any time it gets below 25. Also some of them have a spark plug that will foul....or a weak ignitor, but if it runs then quits it sounds like a fuel problem, try kerosene and see what happens...Jim

sounds like water in the fuel. i'd stick with K1 kero. these have an electric eye, when it starts misfiring it shuts down. unplugging it resets everything.

Are you using the recommended kerosene, or a heavier fuel?

I'm sure you know this but the diesel fuel is to be light...#1, I believe. It certainly can't be summer diesel fuel. Glenn

Yes we are burning diesel now but we used to run kerosene in it. Come to think of it that fuel is a few months old. I will try new fuel and the filters before anything else. Probably should have thought of that in the first place. Thanks for the help and have a nice day.

My experience with a similar heater of different brand was that when fueled with diesel, would fill the garage with smelly diesel smoke in just a few minutes, rendering it impossible to work in there. You'll be much happier with KERO - burns much cleaner!

If the heater is in a COLD area, and the heavy fuel is cold, wax crystals will clog the screen or nozzle, and the heater will act as you describe.

Well it was setting in the shop for along time with no heat on. It got pretty cold in there but I wouldn't think it would get cold enough to hit cloud point. I could be wrong though. I will try new fuel and clean out the tank and filter and see what happens. I am assuming the filter will be in the pickup tube in the tank, or will it be outside in the line? Haven't worked on too many little heaters like that. Thanks for all of your help and info. Have a nice day.

First thing that comes to mind, have you checked the fuel inlet filter? Any moisture or water in the tank? Then replace the plug. If they are OK, you may have a failing ignition system. I had one with the new type electronic ign. coil and it didnt last long, I found an old type coil and it worked, been running since. If you have access to a gauge, you might want to check the pump out put, off hand If I remember right it should be 3 or 4#. Settings should be in the manual.
