Prestone antifreze tester?

Does the antifreeze have to be at operating temperature for one of these things to be accurate or will it be accurate at whatever the amibent fluid temperate is (cold/warm/hot)? I am talking about the one that has a hand bulb on top, an arrow inside that points to the freeze protection level on one side or boil over on the other side and has a draw tube extending from the bottom.

I had one that had a thermometer and chart on it so you could test at any temp and get correct result. Allstate brand, 40 years old. The temp makes quite a difference. Your instructions should have that info.

I have two different testers. On the side of one it says to test hot and the other one says to test cold. I guess it depends on who made them.

Just had a brain fart.

Open a new jug of freeze. Suck some up and record the reading.

Get a container of tap water at the same temp. Suck some up and record the reading.

Pour equal quantities of each into another container for a 50-50 mix. Record the reading.

Stick the nozzle into your radiator (at about the same temp) and suck some up. There's your answer.

I think the back of the freeze container tells you how cold it will protect to in pure form. If not, look EG up on the web. Prestone or someone will tell you.

I have always checked it cold, remember tho there are 2 types testers, depends on what type antifreeze you use, green or pink.

I am told the active ingredient in both orange and green antifreeze is the same, and can be tested with the same tester. Only difference in the two kinds is in the additives to the antifreeze to protect the engine from corrosion, etc. Jury is still out on whether the orange is better.
