Don't think my earlier message took. For all you electrically inclined, I want to convert my '53 Jubilee from 6 volt to 12 volt. Is there any reason to use an alternator over a 12 volt generator? The generator looks more original. Does the alternator help more with lights or other electrical accessories ? Does it charge a lot better? Thanks.

I converted an old austin-Western grader to alternator and solved all it's starting problems. Generator just would not keep the batteries up with the intermittant use we gave it. I salvaged an early alternator off an old school bus and it looked a lot like a big generator. Bored out the original pulley to fit the alternator and everything bolted up. Looked like it belonged and charged like mad just off idle.

A generator will chare up the flattest battery, An alternator will not charge unless there is enough power from battery to allow it to start charging initially. cheers.

Unless you understand electricity those wires look confusing. This and other boards is full of people who now have an alternator and it doesn't work either. So after much time spent, frustration and some occasional electrical smoke. They post a how to wire question. Sometimes it's just best to hook that rebuilt generator up wire by wire as it was found. Use a very high CCA battery,00 cable and swaged cable conectors. #4 AWG Walmart battery cables don't work. Most charging problems are voltage regulators set below 7.1V, worn belts/pulleys and putt putt drivers who never take the tractor above idle speeds. Also cheapskates who save gas by shutting the engine off everytime they dismount the tractor to open a gate or door. Well duh, you are taking more out of the battery than you are putting in.

An alternator with internal regulator generally is more trouble free than a generator, and it never needs to be polarized.

The mechanical voltage regulators used with generators CAN be troublesome, and MANY of the replacements available today are generic imports.

There have been reports of getting several bad-out-of-the-box regulators in a row.

If you use a Delco alternator, they are quite reasonable to obtain, and repairs (if needed) are readily available.

A low output alternator will probably put out more current than all but the biggest generators.

So, if originality is important, go with the generator, for just about every other reason, going with a alternator would be the winner, hands down!

Advantages of an alternator over a generator: Essentially maintenance free (no brushes, etc), cheaper to rebuild/replace when it does wear out, higher output, will charge even at idle.

Advantages of a generator: It "looks right" on a Jubilee and it probably won"t be destroyed if someone hooks the battery up backward.

Bottom line is if you"re gonna work your tractor switch to an alternator. But if it"s used for parade and show, stick with the generator.
