Stihl 025 dies at idle and won't re-start

My 16" Stihl 025 just started to act funny. When it's cold, it fires up as it always has. After I cut a piece and get another situated, sometimes it will die while it's idleing.. Then, I can't get it started again. By the smell, it seems likes it's flooded. I made the idle adjustment as per the manual, but it didn't help.
Any suggestions?

I realize it's been a long time but just in case you still have the problem:
I just had the same problem. PO'd I let it set a day, did the usual checks. left cover off and started right up, as it ran, started getting a bit sputtery like when it died and wouldn't start before. Squeezed the trigger and noticed a tiny splash of fuel on my hand. The longer it ran, the more fuel I got on my hand, only while triggering, till it died and wouldn't start again. It was the fuel line. Could barely see the crack while pushing on it where it bends to go to the carb. Guess it heated up too and leaked more and more air. Replaced havn't had a problem since.

I called Stihl and talked with an in-house tech and this is what he said:
If the idle is too low, it carbons up (too much fuel)and floods and dies. He said the idle rpm should be 2800. If you don't have a tach, (I don't) adjust the LA adjustment screw to where the chain starts to spin, then turn it in to just where it stops, then turn it in one more quarter turn. If that doesn't do it, take it to your local Stihl dealer. He didn't mention the coil or lack of spark, and of course it didn't occur to me. What I can't understand is if it's spark related, why doesn't it happen when you shut it off and then restart it. Oh well. Once again, thanks for the feedback.

I have the same saw with the same problem more or less. It won't restart after cutting a large log and getting it good and hot then letting it die. Found it had no spark when it does this. Let it cool and it starts again. Funny how if I turn it off it always restarts. I suspect the coil.

Hi Chuck.
You have got some good advice from the other posts.
But, does your saw have a spark arrester on the muffler? Try pulling it of and running it then.

I have the same saw and the same problem. I changed the plug and the filter, no change. I have pulled the plug when it won't start and have found it to be flooded, sometimes. I know what a new on cost, but I wonder how much this old saw is worth?

Thanks for the great responses. I'll check all the suggestions out....except for that smashing on rock thing....I used it this morning and after I cut a piece of wood, I would just turn it off and not give it a chance to idle; started right up every time and knocked out about thirty pieces with no further problems, except for a sore arm. I'll just replace all possible suspect parts and see what happens.
Thanks again everyone.

Is the air filter dirty, are you using fresh gas/oil mix, if not empty out the old gas and mix up a fresh gas/oil mix. Are you using 92 octaine gas. My stihl 440 calls for 92 octaine so it's possible your stihl calls for the same. Change the spark plug. Check the fuel filter in the gas tank to see if it's dirty. I have rebuilt several 2 cycle carburetors as the engines were running just like yours is and once I rebuilt the carburetor it ran just fine. I use 92 octaine in all my chainsaws stihl, poulan, mcculloch and they all seem to start easier and run better as well. Check out the forrestry forum (chainsaws) for more chainsaw help. dave

Chuck,
I have an 025 also I was having same problem, a freind of mine is a chain saw mechanic. We did a compression test and found out cylinder was scored a 150. repair not worth it. When motor heats up cylinder expands and compression is lost. I smashed mine on a rock.

Would look into a carb kit, check the pulse line for a leak. Also check the ignition for spark when hot, the coil may be breaking down.

Check compression cold and (if it will stay running long enough)hot. If the two are substantially different, your problem is compression (i.e., ring, or p&c). If the compression is OK, then remove the limiters and open (ccw)the low speed adj. screw 1/2 turn and try. Open 1/2 more if needed, and if the problem is somewhat aleviated, your problem is in the carb.

Tae off the muffler and look at cylinder. If it is scored slightly like mine probly same problem.
