My brother and I each bought one of those little "disposable" Homelites for "limbing" firewood. Both of them lost practically all their power in a month's time. My brother discovered the problem (and the cure)which I am passing on to others that may have experienced similar problems. There is a fine screen (spark arrestor, maybe) covering the exhaust port behind the muffler. This can be removed and cleaned which will restore power to it's original state. Take it out and throw it away, readjust the carb. jet and it will perform better than new. I wonder how many "suburbanites" are taking these things back to the dealers and paying big bucks for a tune-up every couple of months?

We service a lot of small two cycle engines with these little spark arrestors on them. We also rent out alot of two cycle engines, and I can't think of any that still have the spark arrestors on them.

The screen is a spark arrestor that keeps flaming engine particles from igniting your surroundings. Don't throw it out--just spray it with oven cleaner and scrub with scouring powder. I do that and all my machines (some 30 years old) run like new.

Just be aware that, if anyone who removes these spark-aresters during the FIRE season, may and can be held accountable for any and all costs on State, Federal, and Private lands.

These little screens are osha, I think. My weedeater was barely running until I took the screen off. Ran like a top. They are also present on leaf blowers and maybe even small lawnmowers. I guess anything that has a 2 cycle engine is susupect.

Another way to clean the screen, is to heat it red hot (will Not hurt it) and after it cools, just brush off the carbon and it is like new.
