O.T. Rust stains on Aluminum runing boards

I have a pair of aluminum truck runing boards, That have some rust stains on them. What would one use to remove the rust. Thanks Dave F.

Those boards should either be clear annodized or sprayed with a clear coat to protect them. The stain may well be on the coating and not all the way to the aluminum substrate. Any product that has an abrasive in it will affect the long-term durability of the protective coating and it can accelerate oxidation. If you know the manufacturer they can give you the best idea as to what to use to clean them and maintain protection. If not, a good motorcycle shop will have a polishing paste that will do the job. There is a brand that I used to use on my 2-wheelers called "Simichrome Polish" that is really good and is still sold. Stay away from scotch brite and/or steel wool.

Go to your local auto parts store and buy some aluminum cleaner/polish. Using something like CLR will corroded the aluminum and make it look worse than it does now. Steel wool will scrath it. There a lot of good aluminum cleaners/polishes on the market and that is the best to use.

I bought at a Truck Stop, Pilot, I think, a polish called "Blue Magic Metal Polish Cream" that some truckers recommended for aluminum wheels. It works well on aluminum for cleaning and polishing.It was $8-$9 for a 19.38 oz jar. I also remember seeing it at either Checkers or Auto Zone.

But, stay away from the "non-rusting" type made of plastic weave..... ..... ....they scratch things.
