Has anyone been buying a toilet lately? I went to buy one today and was flabbergasted by the complexity that has taken over the toilet industry. Our first one was a two holer halfway between the barn and the house but since they moved the thrones indoors a renaissance has occurred in toilet making.

They have one piece and two piece units. They have gravity or pressure assisted jobs. They have Regular Height and also Comfort Height which is ADA compliant. They have round toilets and they have elongated toilets. They have different colors like Cashmere, Almond, Daydream, Light Mink, Candlelyght, loganberry, Rain Forrest, Wild Rose, Innocent Blush, and Tea Green. They have names for the toilets like Memoirs, Nostalgia, Perfect Fit, Reminiscence, and Town Square.

Holy Smoke I went home without a toilet and shaking my head because I know that toilet shopping is no longer a job for the man of the house.

By the way they all have the 12" setback so anything else has to be a special order.

A little while back I got rid of three American Standard Plebe's which wouldn't flush worth a hoot and installed three Toto Drake's. They work great. They have a HUGE flapper valve that just briefly opens, then slams shut. Absolutely no second flushes in over six months or so. Contrary to what you might think the tank does not empty on each flush. The extra water provides pressure head. The pressure assisted toilets sound like a good idea, but you need to check parts availability and prices first.

Eljer is the brand we have. Works pretty good as it's rare that it plugs, and 99% of the time it's because someone tried to flush a #2 with a #1 flush. It has the 2 flush modes, a quick tap for mellow yellow, or hold the lever for a few seconds for the browns, works pretty good, plus it's pretty quiet.

Fellas, I have put in two of these toilets in the past three years (different brands) and when mounted to the floor, they tanks on both were about two inches from the wall. As the second one I put in was a one piece, I'm wondering what is going on? The bathroom wall needed repainting behind the tank-lotsa space there now. Both were for the standard 12" setback. I bought the golf ball toilet for the wife for Christmas. She loves it, no plunger can be found in the bathroom.
It's called the "Champion" by American Standard.
It will swallow a bear sized load with no problem.
I wouldn't flush it while sitting on it, might end up in the toilet.
They are alittle pricey at $250.00, but worth the silence. No cussing from the wife about having to plunge after taking a leak.
I got two of them old high gallon flush models out behind the shop, I can't crap in em, figured I'd get the most pleasure from them as targets for the ole 22.

Just read through all the posts. Anyone been to Home Depot and see the one where they flush a bucket of golf balls down the toilet? Claim it will not plug up. Flush all kinds of stuff down it on the video----- -

Just wonder where the golf balls go after that.

The golf-ball eater is an American Standard Champion. I've installed two in my house and am about to install a third. They are very good - flush first time every time on less than 1.6 gal. Standard offering is called "right-height". Its good for adults but quite a reach for kids.

I guess if one of those units can handle golf balls it should be able to handle kidney stones eh?

Do you remember the brand? I'd like to persuade the library where I work to switch out all of the toilets. It seems we are always calling in a plumber to unstop one due to jerks putting in too much toilet paper or paper towels in order to stop them up on purpose.

Seems like replacing 9 toilets to low volume sure fired flushing ones would pay off before long considering just the water savings.

Now about that brand name----

I put in Toto brand. I told the supply house if it needed more than one flush they had to take it back and they said they would,they didn`t have to.

We have a couple of those 1.6 gpf toilets in our house. One thing to watch for...Make sure the float is set to fill the tank to the max. Also make sure the flapper is adjusted so the tank completely empties when you flush. Glenn F.

Becareful of the "instock" new ones. I like to rebuild them heavy older ones.

New ones don't use enought water. Have to flush two many times to make sure the sewer line don't get clogged when the older guests pay a visit.

I know that I feel guilty about the amount of water I am usn. So, for me, most times I use the "great outdoors". If NEW neighbors don't like it, THEY have a problem,,,,, NOT ME.

Stainless steel is always in style. Here's a neat idea...just surround your toilet (this one is in London) with one-way mirrors, and watch the world go by!

We had to re-do the bathrooms in this money pit when we moving in plus numerous other items. Told the plumber we wanted the old fashioned water wasting 2 imperial gallons per flush. Ended up with some American Standard high seated aberration with a very tall tank. Uses about 1/2 of the tank per flush. Must be the extra flush energy from the water running down hill all that way. Final test is to have my cheap relatives come up here for a cheese eating contest. I annoy the wife by calling the new extra upstairs fixture a "biddy". Kids think it's a great toy. Wife was furious when she seen the urinal go in the basement washroom. Suggestions of how it would save water or not having to go outside and whiz on the roses went unheeded. Wonder if it's some kind of envy?

So you will be getting a new throne, congrats. Since it will also be one of those "water saving" toilets, be sure to buy a plunger that fits. You will find out why soon enough. They may save water per flush, but they don't say it may take more than one flush per visit.

That's no kidding about the more than one flush per trip.... Y'know, someone ought to invent a toilet with a valve lever sticking out the side of it that lets a person choose between a Water-Saving-Trickle-Flush for those small jobs or a Super-Duper-Bowl-Blaster-Flush for those times that require it....

Maybe to save space the two different valve positions could just be marked #1 and #2. :)

Funny you should mention about some company having partial flush toilets.

My daughter and SIL built a new home a couple of years ago. The plumber installed just such toilets. For a #1 flush you trip the handle and release. For a #2 flush you trip the handle, hold it briefly, then release.

I personally would go with the comfort height, in the elongated bowl, pressure assited, two piece, and finally in white. The extra height is well worth it and the elongated makes it so you dont feel like you are sitting on a soup can. And for the two piece reasoning if some how it gets broke you can replace the bowl or the tank instead of having to buy a whole new one. And pressure assisted for the hearty number 2"s :) Mike

hey,,,, what about bidets?? my woman had me put in one and at the time i thought it was rediculous.cost 500.00 for the thing and the fixture..... but i have to say,,,its great.i look forward to using it after every visit to the throne.cleanest @ss in the shop..lucas

Go with ADA compliant, cause you'de have to pay someone else to install it if you wait until you are disabled. Primary rule: "Don't fight; go with white!" All those other colors will be out of style in a very short time.

Good Advice. I second the white ADA throne. Being somewhat on the tall size, I installed an ADA compliant toilet a couple of years ago when I remodeled my bathroom. I enjoy (if that"s the word to use) the extra height. I can spend time on the throne(that"s where I catch up on my reading)without my legs going to sleep. It"s the small things in life that mean so much.

I have 3 of the pressure assisted toilets in my house. I've never had a problem getting anything to go down, but the pressure is so great that it literally blows everything apart and sometimes some "particles" come back into the bowl. Imagine the shock when you open the lid again later. I can't seem to find a way to lower the pressure. I'm not entirely happy with these units but at least nothing gets stuck.
