Questions on Logan metal lathe

I am thinking of buying my first metal lathe. It is a 12 x 28" with 1 HP motor, 8" - 3jaw chuck, tail stock, chip tray, and stand. The seller says it is in good condition. I would use for
small repair projects and making parts in my tractor restoration hobby. Seller is asking $1500.00 for the lathe. Is this fair price, is a Logan brand a good machine, and what things should I look at when I inspect the lathe? Thanks.

See if you/or seller can take a few test cuts under power. I have seen beautiful lathes that chattered, & clunkers that made mirror-smooth cuts....

Rereading what I posted the other dayI would like to add:Imay live in an area where more old machinery is available than you.If you like this one machine and you will use it and it has a chuck for the tailstock and a means to hold atool now so when you got it home you could turn a peice of metal without spending more money on tooling.In good condition [not pristine as I stated]1500 could be reasonable.Some wear just not all abused.

The Logan lathe is one of the best, make sure that it has a quick change gear box, however missing tooling will add much more $. Logan now is located in Harvard IL, web site www.loganact.com

While I enjoy the QC gearbox on my12" Lodge and Shipley, I also get some satisfactio from making up the gear train on my 10" Logan. QC is nice but not mandatory if the lathe is in good condition.

The logan lathes were made in the USA. Go to the site below for more information. It may take a while to open due to the pictures. The site also sees much traffic- enough that they cannot open all of the site each day. The Logan site opened when I just tried it. If it does not open when you try it try the following day- or better yet go to www.lathes.co.uk/ and read about the ones you can open that day

Whether it is too much depends on condition as well as what you get with it. How about tooling? You can sink a lot of money in the tools and holders you need to use a lathe. Another thing to think about is the distance between centers. With a 12" swing, 28" between centers seems short. How big is the hole thru the spindle? With that short bed you will probably need to use it quite a bit, so the bigger the better. My lathe has a 3 9/16" hole and it is not big enough. If the lathe is as the seller says, has some tooling, and suits your needs(or wants)it sounds like a decent deal to me.

Seems like that should be about a 5 horsepower motor.Is it 3phase? With so many machine shops closing I think it sounds high priced.Unless its original owner of a real low mileage machine that comes with alot of tooling I would keep looking.What you want to avoid is one from a school they are beat up by students.1500 should get you a pristine condition lathe.Use ebay to compare prices.Look closely at the ways for wear etc.Just my opinion of course ,but too much unless it is like new.

Open everything up if there are any broken teeth on any gears its probably from a trade school.Just lok at every surface where friction occured.Act like you Know what your lookin at.Take you time.For the same money you can get a smithy.This is a small machine aimed at hobby machinists.But it also does milling.It is Chinese more than likely but is checked for accuracy before they sell it.Bad ones are rejected.Quality should be ok.[That doesent sound too good "should be"]So shop around years ago our country actually manufactured things,when China took over that all the good machines stayed here for us to use.
