I was vectored here from the Home Gunsmithing Forums. I am buying a two stage compressor for my shop, and have down selected to two models, both 7 HP 80 gallon, two stage units. One is a Campbell Hausfeld from Grizzley Industrial, and the other is a US General from Harbor Frieght. Both look very similar in terms of construction and specifications. I did look at the HF model up close, and it has a Baldor US motor.

Is there anyone out there that has any feedback concerning the function and relaibility of either of these models? Any and all comments are welcome, I am trying to make the best choice possible.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Cheers,
Chris Long

You might want to take a look here. They seem to be solid units and you leave out the middle man so more compressor for your buck.

C-Air is what most of the body shops in this area use, most last 10-15 years in this use. They run $500 and up.

I would think about pricing a Gardner Denver if you want quality. The Campbell H..feld and the Huskys and Crapsmen are lower end stuff. I have a small 2hp Campbell H. I use it for pumping up car tires, toys etc. Gardner Denver is mostly US made and used for industrial applications. You will have to call an industrial air supply center. If you want more info on where to find a GD distrubutor just chime in on this site and let me know.

Thanks to all for the input. I am looking for a Quincy at this point. There is one distributor in the Seattle area.

Thanks again all!

Chris

I have an 80 gallon 2 Stage (V-type) which is branded as a HUSKY. It is cast iron 175 psi.
Bought it at Home Depot.
I think it is manufactured by Campbell Hausfield.
The motor is American made A.O.Smith.
Motor HP 7.5.
There are a series of CH out now that are 2 stage , but 140 psi max. Don't know much about these.
I am very pleased with the unit I purchased.

I looked at both sites. If this is the compressor you are talking about from HF:

Link

it has an Italian aluminum pump that I am not particularly fond of. There seems to be a lot of cheap aluminum pumps coming out of Italy for some reason. Some are decent, others garbage. Chinook pumps are usually good, but Balma pumps are iffy. I think the US General one is a Balma.

I am not sure which CH you are looking at, but the one listed as a 7HP is nowhere near that much. 7 HP is a bogus figure, since no such electrical motor exists, at least in the 10 years or so I have been working with compressors. Same goes for 6hp, 4.5hp and 6.5hp, more marketing jiggery-pokery. The 7.5 hp Campbell Hausfeld for sale at Grizzley is indeed a real 7.5 hp unit however, and it is a good pump. The 7hp "4 cycle" is a 4 cylinder single stage compressor. It is a good pump, but not a two stage.

If I was looking to buy a good compressor for a decent price, I would try to locate a Quincy dealer in your area and price out one of their QT series compressors. It is Quincy's lighter duty line of machines, but every bit as good as the name implies. I imagine there is a brand of gun that is universally regarded as being the best, or very near the best. Well, Quincy is that for compressors.

Roger:

Thanks for the input. I am still looking for a local source of the Quincy.

Another poster to this thread vectored me to the Eaton line of compressors, and I am looking at this one:

Any comments about this company or products? It looks good on the surface, family owned and red, white, and blue all the way.

I appreciate your help.

Cheers,

Chris

We've seen these guys before here. This is not a bad option for you. While a heavy cast-iron pump, it is a bit on the lower end of the quality scale >for heavy INDUSTRIAL use< however, for a homeowner, or light commercial use I think it would give many years of good service. Plus, you would be supporting a small business, which is a bonus. Some of the "features" are a bit hyped, but the real meat and potatos, the HP and cfm delivery, are spot on for 5 hp. If the Quincy was near enough in price, I'd still go Quincy, or Champion (forgot to mention them last time), but I believe you wouldn't go wrong with this unit. The pump is from Taiwan. It is a copy of a Saylor Beall, or Webster, depending on who you ask. A local company, Princess Auto, builds compressors with this pump, and its 10hp brother. I saw a performance data card attached to the pump, and it read just over 17 cfm, signed by the manager in Chinese script.

Rodger is correct, virtually all of the 7 horse compressors are bogus hp. Most are actually around 4 horse if that.

When you jump to 7.5 horse power, you are talking true horsepower.

I have one of the home depot Husky 7.5 horse, 80 gal tank two stages. It is an inline two cyl pump, american made, with a mexican made emerson motor. Exact same as the C-H unit of same specs, about 24 cfm airflow. Very good compressor, a little noisy (most noise comes from the air inlet I discovered) and these sold for quite a while for $1499 and I think have gone up to $1599 now.

Here is a link to look at..... ..

I support your looking at a Quincy QT series air compressor. I run mine all the time, keep the oil changed and tank drained daily, can"t go wrong. I bought mine through Harbour Freight.
