Hi All, A while back we were discussing what to do with surface pits on hydraulic rams. I just got done rebuilding a 3"x 1-1/2" that was bent 1/2" from straight about 10" from the end. I straighten the bend to within 1/16" both ways. I had to use a torch and a hydraulic jack to straighten the ram and didn't pit the chrome but it was pitted in several places pretty bad already, down too the base metal. I didn't put a seal kit in because I wanted to reinstall the cylinder first to see if it was usable. During the straighting process I heated the seals extreamlly hot and expected them to leak but to my supprise they didn't. Not only that it still did not leak as I left pressure over the pitts for some time. Were talking 12 pitts or so within 2" area on the ram.

I really don't think trying to repair the ram pitts is justified after my little test.

t bone:
the lift cylinders on my old 30 were pitted and leaked bad.I cleaned them between centers on the lathe(they are not chromed,i used fine emery)and put them back together with new rings and packings.(rings are steel, packings are felt v type).Cost about $20 and 4 years latter still do not leak.

Hi Al, I wish I had a lathe when straighting the ram. It's workable but thats about it. Where did you get your felt packing at? I used the orginal type that the cylinders were built with.
