This is very old, I think. It is 3-4 inches long. Mostly brass with steel cutting blade. Pulling the hook on the end cocks the cutting blade. Pushing the lever on the side releases the blade. Can anyone tell me anything about this?

By now you know what your "tool" is and what it was used for, and in my humble opinion yours looks old and authentic. I think $100 - 150 catches most of these single blade fleams. They actually are a somewhat fairly common medical item, as most of them were saved over the years, like old watches.
Wishing you a Happy 2005 ☺☺☺

I can't vouch for yours or the web site as to real or fakes but I did not think that was the question. That type was used in the 17-18 and sometimes 19 century for bleeding folks
here is another web site with lots of information and you will see one similar to yours fake or not

My Dad and I saw one sell at an auction many years ago, I asked him what it was, he told me it was used to lance boils and was an instrument kept in barber shops. The red and white striped "barber pole" indicated such an instrument within. So when you needed a boil lanced you went to the barber and this instrument is what the barber used to lance your boils. OUCH!!! Anybody agree or disagree? I am just glad I never needed one used on me!

There is an instrument still in use today akin to it. Phlebotomists use them to draw blood from infants when they cannot get a draw on a vein. Use them on the heel of the foot. Makes a small bleeding punture. A similar devise is used to punture the fingertip to draw blood for diabetes testing. The modern ones are smaller and disposable but I suspect your tool is its granddaddy!

Hi Bill,

I wouldn't get too exicted as the one on the website for $185 appears to be fake.

You will notice that there's never a 360 view in the group of pictures, one side is always left out, the important view.

On the box its a back view of the box hinge.

Bottom L/R side views of the tool, craftmanship doesn't match on the tool.

Hi T_Bone

I am not understanding what you are saying. The $185 item looks very similar to mine. What is it used for? How long ago was it used? Does it have anything to do with bloodletting? I've read a lot of your posts and you know something about a lot of different things. Please tell me what you know about bleeders. Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill,

I collected antique clocks and pocket watchs for about 10yrs as well as a few other items. Clocks use alot of brass in them so I can pretty much spot a fake movement from the metal mix.

The $185 tool is probably made from new rifle brass or 70/30 brass whereas old brass contains a higher precentage of copper.

I can't comment on your tool as there's not enough views to tell me very much.

I never did to much into Doctor tools, mostly eye tools when I did, so I can't tell you anything.

Research on the PBS website as Antique Road Show had some custom made Doctor tools on there program last year and you will see a huge difference in what they have and the $185 tool.

Hi T-Bone, I agree with your point about brass... a few years ago, some friends (they knew I deal in old things) brought a brass compass they had bought, They were excited, thought they had a treasure... From 10 feet away, it said "Pakistan" I hated to burst their bubble, but had to tell them.

That certainly is it! in reply to tech4, 12-31-2004 11:11:14
Can you tell me how it was used? How long ago was this kind of tool used? I will be looging for further information - maybe using Google.
Thanks so much, Bill
