I have an older Craftsman chainsaw. Have cleaned the carb with commerical carb cleaner (soaked it). Also have rebuilt carb, new screen, gaskets, diaphram, etc.. If I use a manual vacum pump I can pull gas from the tank. If I sray cleaner or starting fluid in the carb it will start, but still not pull gas from tank and dies. Pulled muffler and piston does not look scored. How do I check the vacum port on the engine that is used to activate the carb diaphram so that it pumps fuel? Any other ideas.

Thanks..
Bill

I encountered a similar problem on a weedwhacker last summer. Problem turned out to be a plugged fuel inlet screen inside the carb body. The screen is a cup-shaped affair, about the diameter of a pencil eraser. The mesh openings are so small it looks like a pressed-in sheet brass plug at first. When I tried to blow air thru it, found it was plugged up. Carb cleaner wouldn't touch it, but when I lightly heated it with a propane torch, it took only a moment for it to burn clean. Rinsed it in carb cleaner, put it all back together, and now it starts on a couple of pulls every time.

Have you made sure your exhaust isn't plugged? I had a weed eater that wouldn't crank until I removed the exhaust - dirt dobbers had built a nest in it - completely filling it with dirt! Just a thought.

put a dab of grease over the pulse hole with carb off, pull start rope if the grease blows off-- the port is clear. Also be sure you have holes matched in gaskets and flanges.

Have you pulled the filter out of the fuel tank? Located at the end of the fuel line. You can use a piece of wire to pull the hose and clean it. This has a tendency to gum up..
