You have to "bleed" the pump. There are a few variations in burner pumps, but most modern units have a plug in the pump with kind of a hose barb sticking out of the plug. Loosen that plug a bit, and reset the primary control, while holding a "catch can" under the bleeder. (Be sure you know how to shut the burner "OFF", if you need to, before starting it!)

Bleed enough fuel out 'till the air bubbles quit, and tighten the plug securely. Probably expect to bleed out 1/2 to 2 cups of fuel.

(As you probably know, if it doesn't start then, get help. Don't keep pushing the reset button, on the chance that raw fuel is being pumped into the chamber.)

The link below is to Suntec (formerly Sundstrand), and shows one type of pump likely to be used on a Beckett burner.

(It's in .pdf format.)

There should be a bleeder valve on the pump side of the burner, right where the oil line goes in. Turn the furnace on and crack that valve (Have a pan or something handy...) and it should clear the line. Might have to do it a couple of times.

I realize that this is several hours late but if you ran out of fuel you probably sucked a lot of crap out of your tank. You probably should run down to HEP and pick up a new filter if bleeding the pump does'nt work. The other fellers were correct crack open the bleeder till it quits blowing bubbles. Fortunatly it is warm today and tomorrow.
