Howdy, all.

This is probably a really dumb question, but I need to make progress on a project in the shop, so here goes. Are helicoil taps proprietary/odd sizes, or are they just normal SAE and metric taps? I have some valve cover threads to repair that are M6x1.0 and I have found helicoils in town, but the taps and kits are a bit scarcer.

Thanks, and y"all have a blessed New Year.
Darren

Helicoils suck,to expensive ,need exact tap.
also only good for one use .Get threaded inserts ,they use standard taps ,can be locked in place with loctite.

You're doing something wrong if your helicoils are only good for one use.

The helicoil tap must have the same number of threads per inch as the fastener thus to answer your question, no they are not just a size or two larger Std tap. J&L supply (sorry no link handy) will have you the kit tomorrow if you get it ordered today before noon but they do get thier money for the fast service.

McMaster DOES have the taps and kits. The tap sizes ARE proprietary. The tap is $10.91 at McMaster.

If you want to avoid buying a tap, check into "thread repair inserts". They have a stansard thread, a couple of sizes bigger than the original, but you'll need more metal around the hole, because you'll be making it considerably bigger. For 6.0MM the hole required for these is 3/8" NC or M10X1.5, although there may be some slighly thinner ones available.

They are oversized. I don't think you can "go up to the next size" ie use a 5/16ths tap for a 1/4 helicoil, I'm pretty sure they're proprietary.

You can buy a kit with the drill, the tap, a handful of coils and an insert tool for the size you want, and then just buy extra helicoils as needed.

Didn't read the post carefully enough. I see you know about the kits. You might check McMaster-Carr for kits if you can't find 'em locally.

By the way, I have googled the stew out of this question and can't find a cross-reference or other guide anywhere.

Some standard taps will coinside with helicoil taps but would not be marked as such. This outfit will have all helicoil kits and separate pcs.:MSC1800-645-7270;mscdirect.com They will send you a huge catalog of machine shop supplies with a large section of helicoil and other thread repair kits or individual drills, taps, and varius inserts.
