I'd like to construct a metal roller to make tanks, hoods, etc. It would need to handle 6 foot wide sheets; does anyone have ideas, plans or thoughts? Iknow it would have to be stout.

Suggest you go to www.lindsaybks.com. There are "How to Books" on both slip rollers and english wheels. Both can be made at home IF you have suitable equipment to work heavy metal. I haven't found auctions to be cost effective. Most I've been to recently were full of people with "auction fever". I'd search the used equipment dealers in your local paper and on the web. You might also try Sobel Machinery 201 768 9645 Fax 2842 no website. Also Meridian at www.mermac.com. Eastwood's prices are too high. Look thru Hemmings - there are several people making english wheels.

cool idea, take your time and keep your eyes open for stuff, because if you start buying new materials, you probably should watch for a good deal on a machine(high schools are getting rid of shop stuff).your rolls will have to be at least 3" in dia with good finish and high carbon steel or better(4140 maybe).i would use 3x3x1/4 angle for the base with a wide stable base.Large pillow blocks should carry the rolls.Gear it at least 2;1(it is good to slow down when working sheet, get better control)limit your self to 16 ga.you can do it
good luck

Hi carl, It's not the width thats the liimiting factor but the thickness of the metal. Give me an idea on what gauge of metal your working with. Your right it's going to be stout and expensive. If your not in a hurry, I sure would watch the auctions accross the country before building my own. But not impossible!

Sounds you need a pexto type of roller/edger. The Eastwood Restoration cataog usually has something like this. Have seen an English GreatWheel, with a 4ft. throat, used for custom coachbuilding, custom auto body, watch for Pexto tools at sheet metal places, etc.
