OT - '91 Park Ave Light Monitor ?

Recently bought a nice '91 Buick Park Ave. It has a Light Monitor above the rear view mirror which has 8 or 10 red indicators if a light is OUT, eg Stop, Park, Tail, etc. The Stop indicator is on, although every stop light bulb is OK; and the brake is not on.

How does this monitor sense a 'bad bulb'? Does it measure current in the circuit? does it 'see' the light output?

Answers? Ideas? thanks!

I remember working on a bulb monitor one time and finding the problem to be that someone had installed different bulbs on the left and the right. The circuit measured the current and recognized the different current draw of the bulbs as one being burned out. Change both bulbs in the circuit and see if that cures it.

Can't remember for sure, but if you're sure all the lights work on that car try turning the light switch on & off four or five times. Jim

I Googled 'lamp monitor' and found a discussion on a '92 Park Avenue that had a control module mounted deep behind the dashboard. Ask the Goodwrench parts guy about this, he can shed some light if there is a control module or not, and where it is.

I believe the Buicks interior mounted readout uses electronics,rather than fibre optics like the Caddy's fender mounted monitors.Believe each lamp housing has a sensor"lamp module" which senses the light/or lack of and sends signal to monitor.Carefully check the indicated"bad lamp",may be just a dirty/dusty eye on the sensor in that lamp...else wise speak to dealer about"lamp module" problem or replacement.

Hi J,

They use optic fibers (glass cables).

When you are looking at a lit monitor, you are actually looking at the particular light's illumination, which is filtered thru the little colored monitor lens.

I agree this is the way the early 90s Caddy light sensor works, but..... ... in the Buick the monitor light is supposed to come on when the light is OFF ??
