I posted this a few years ago and did not get any help. I am trying to identify this tool. I got it in a box of tools from an auction and have no idea what it is. It has a small cutting edge on the inside. It says, "order cutters by gauge" on the outside of it. thanks for the help.

Well, there is no doubt now. Harold was right. There is one just like it on ebay right now. After he told me what it was, i was able to search for it. Just search under "armature cutter" and you will see the one i am talking about. thanks again everyone who helped out

Fellers I just cant figure how this tool cuts in a strait line . Looks like it would cut an arc .
Is there something broke off the tool or is it complete ? Hard to believe mica cutter. On a second look maybe you could hold the cutter rigid and slide the armature huh ? good evening

The cutter is spring loaded and swivels to stay in a staight line.

What are the dimensions? Are there two rods on the slide, or just one? On the footed piece, are there signs that it was clamped down? any names, trademarks, or patent numbers? Because patent numbers can be searched for maker. Ever been repainted, if so, what is the original paint color? John in Nebraska

It is a mica undercutter for stater and generator armatures. After you turn the commutator in a lathe, you lay the armature in the v-blocks of the tool, and run the cutter down each groove in the commutator to cut the mica insulation below the level of the copper bars, and be sure no burrs or shavings are shorting the bars together. The adjusting screws are to keep it from cutting too deep,I think.

I forgot, the rectangular block on the bottom is so you can hold it in a vise while you use it.

I agree completely with Harold. I had a friend that rebuilt motors for golf carts and a mica undercutting tool was the first thing that popped into my mind when I saw it.
