Pull-start/no-clutch chipper

My brandnew MTD 8hp Tecumseh chipper came with manual pull-start only, and without a clutch, although the motor-housing provides a slot to bolt on an electric starter. Trouble is, the heavy duty input chute partially blocks that slot, and the factory says no electric start can be fitted. It takes enormous muscle and a strong left leg on top of the unit to pull/start the beast. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I have a Patriot chipper that uses a 8 HP Tecumseh and it starts pretty easy, even when cold. I just choke it fully every time I start it and it catches and comes up to speed pretty good. I have a feeling your engine might be a little tighter than mine if you are finding it takes a heavy pull. If that is the case, it should get easier after it is fully broken in.

Thanks, big fred. Good point. My 10hp tecumseh (not 8hp as I thought)has only run a total of 3-4 hours since new, and broke in is just what she may need. Also someone elses forum suggestion about handling the pulls. Mahkel

get a cheap centrifugal clutch for a go kart and install it so that you can disengaage the motor from the load.

The key to starting these things is....

speed...

You cannot just give it one pull you have to pull to get the momemtum of the large drum going.

Small engines will NOT start unless the rpms are at a certain range. When you give it one big pull the time the rpm's is in the correct range is very short

So you have to pull and pull and pull as quick as you can and then it will start rather quickly...

I would imagine that an electric start could not easily overcome the weight of the drum....

It doesn't have a lever to disengage the belt? If not, you can buy a clutch much cheaper than an electric start.

In reply to the Nathan GA note, the chipper/shredder does not come with a belt. And someone on the forum suggested installing a cheap gokart clutch. How so? There seems to be no space between the chipper-drum and the horizontal Tecumseh to fit a clutch. Mahkel

So, I assume it is direct drive straight off the shaft. The only ones I have seen like that are the smaller electric models. I can see why you are having difficulties.

Can you return this unit for a refund or trade on a belt drive unit? I think you would be much happier with a belt drive. That's how the other person was getting at using the gokart clutch.

My uncle has an electric start Troybilt chipper that he would sell for under $600. It's only been used a couple of hours.

Thanks Nathan. No, I doubt very much that MTD will take my twice-used chipper back. I already emailed about the problem and got a very short answer back, saying no electric start! Your offer re your uncle's chipper is kind, but I'm up here in Ontario. I'll try pull-starting my unit the proper way as suggested by another forum-contributor. Just have to heat up the garage for that. Thanks again. Mahkel

Belsaw carries a unit that allows you to use an electric drill to start small gas engines. I'm not sure of the price or if it would turn over the chipper engine. You could call Belsaw or email them and possibly get an answer. If you need additional information, email me and I'll provide what I can as far as part number and phone numbers. If it works let em know as I also have a MTD chipper.

Good luck..
Bill

Jr. dragsters all use a modified "5"hp Briggs single cylinder engine. They start it with a hand held electric starter. I would try doing a web search on Jr. Dragsters. See if a web site shows the setup and if it could work on your engines.
