Shopping for a new digital camera as the old Sony is just not up to snuff.....anybody want to weigh in with their opinions on Digitals....what features are vital and what to avoid, etc. My camera is about 8 years old and was one of the first around in it's day, at that time shopping was easy. Now it is confusing.....thanks in advance. Right now I am kinda interested in the Kodak easyshare line...but I am open to other suggestions.

Hi Brian,

My son & Daughter-in-law bought us a Cannon Power Shot A95, 5mb. Takes 4 AA battery's. Got the 15min AA rechargeable batterys.

WOW! What a first digital cammera. I have not found out what it can NOT do.

Not only that but a HP-psc-1350v, printer, scanner and copier, either stand alone orperation or with puter. Upto 30"x20" Photo quality pictures . DL cammera or fax (fax on puter) 17pages black, 12pages color at 1200dpi non-puter, 4800 x 1200dpi puter assist.

The Son also bought the DIL the same package thats she's been using for a couple weeks. Man whats a system.

Install hint: Install both the cammera and the printer software "first" then wait until it asks you to plug in the cammera or printer USB. This is with using XP. Yes there plug and play but software has to be installed first or it glitchs on install.

Love the Sony I had for a bit from a friend. Always go for the highest Meg count you can afford. This stuff always gets better and better almost over night. I can't even wrap my brain around the thought of an 18meg camera on line in a few months. It might be in "field trials" right now. This will be better than real film! Several other posts say how Sony color is and I agree. Now I shoot semipro video and use Sony VX-2000 cameras. Awsome 2lux camera that can shoot video in full moon light. Yea at 1/4 shutter speed but I can do it. Now go to Videomaker magazine and check out the review for the new Sony HDR-FX1 HD camera. Only $3700 worth of FULL blown HD! Jeffcat

Shot Canon, Kodak, and Nikon. Spend the money and get a D70 Nikon, they have a deal going on now. It's well worth it. The same guts as the D2 series professional. Go Nikon no matter what you buy. Best pics.

I have an Olympus D-510. It takes great pictures but always defaults to high quality. The problem that I have with high quality is that if i e-mail pictures they don"t fit the page. Standard quality works fine but requires changing the settings before each use. I am looking for a camera that defaults to standard quailty. Any ideas?
Bill

The Canon cameras have some of the best sensors and software, but they are a little pricier than the Kodaks. You can't go wrong with any of the cameras that you mentioned. You have to decide on a budget and megapixels first, then narrow it down. You can get a good idea of the pros and cons of each model by reading the discussions on dpreview.com.

After you get all done with reading the various reviews, go and hold the cameras and see how well they fall to hand.

In looking at the 3 megapixal cameras, I narrowed it down to the Canon A75, Nikon Coolpix and the Olympus somethingorother. The olympus was simply uncomfortable for me to use. The Nikon I really liked. Very intuitive and easy. The Canon was almost as easy to use as the Nikon, but not quite. However, it was a more powerful camera with a number of more advanced parameters should I want to use them. I went with the Canon as a result.

I would not recommend the Kodak based on my experience with them at home and at work. Quite failure prone, phenomenally battery hungry.

I checked out a lot of cameras before choosing the Canon PowerShot G5 (now replaced with the G6). If you like Kodak, get the DX6490. It was one I was considering. I have 2 friends with the DX6490 and they send me a lot of pictures and they all look mighty good.

Kodak cameras are the easiest to use and they have excellent optics. I have a 3 mp and my in-laws just got a new Kodak that they love. Get at least 3 mp. You can pay more for other brands but they will be more difficult to use. The Kodak software is great.

I searched a while before I found a digital camera comparable to a good 35mm thru-the-lens model. No longer in production, the Olympus C2500L was purchased on eBay for $200. The specs: 2.5mp, 3X optical zoom, built in flash, hot shoe for external flash, 4 AA batteries, compact flash card and/or smart media card, close up to 2 cm, self timer, automatic or manual focusing and exposure, 3 ASA settings, and true thru-the-lens viewfinder (not electronic). 85 page manual. New about '99 was $1100-1200. I bought a 12-in-1 USB card reader for under $20 to download to computer using Olympus photo software

We"ve had good luck with Olympus at work but my personal camera is a Nikon 5mp with an 8 power optical zoom. I always had a couple of zoom lenses for my 35mm"s and the Nikon is one of the few with a decent range optical zoom. It also couples automatically to a Nikon strobe so I can do flash pictures more than 5 feet away.
You would not go far wrong with a Nikon, Canon, or Olympus

Will have to say, I have not seen a new model that I would trade my Sony Mavica FD3 series for yet. I know it is old hat technology, but sure do like the fact it uses regular floppy disks and not a memory card or stick. You can get floppy disks almost anywhere, and it also held up well when the grandson used it and dropped it. I like the fact that you can take a 1 minute video with it. It gets good mileage from the rechargeable battery, and you can take the disk out of the camera and look at it in anybodys computer that will read a jpg file and not have to have a special reader. It worked so well that we bought our daughter one just like it so she would bring ours back home. Will probably use if for a while longer. Gene Davis

That is a loaded question! It really depends on what you intend to do with it and how much you want to spend. I like the 4 & 5 Megapixel Kodaks for a great results, they are a great compact carry along, get one a 3X zoom. The 3-4 Megapixel Fugifilms also give great results. I like the the Konica Minolta line for a little better camera with a great results, zoom and excellent features, its in the $500-600 range. Forget the Kodak dock and buy a universal card reader (same gos for any brand) and load photos into the computer that way, about $30-40. Also get an extra set of rechargable batteries and a portable charger if the camera dosn't come with one. Don't forget the memory cards that are furnished with the camers are not very big so plan on buying a 256 or 512 card in the near future, get them when they go on sale. If you want to spend $1000 or more there are several great ones out there too.

I have an Olympus 3MP and a Fuji 4MP. I have no problem with either but would recommend the Fuji. It was a better bargan. Both are easy to use. I'd get a recharger also or one that recharges it's internal battery via a docking station, etc. Digital Cameras eat them batteries.

Asked essentially the same question on here in January '04. Wound up buying Fuji A303..... just because I thought I got more bang for the buck with it at the time; bought it in February. Truly love it..... .Only suggestion I would make is to buy one that uses generic/rechargable batteries (mine uses 2 AAs). Some cameras use brand specific batteries, which limits your options for battery replacement.

Well, I have an HP that suits me just fine.. 4.0 meg and easy to use. Whichever one you choose, I recommend one that has a docking station. When I set it in it's dock, it automatically recharges itself and it also is connected to my 'puter by way of a usb port. So, I'm ready to transfer pics to my C drive or my disc without any fumbling.

I have a Canon A80 which I love. It's idiot proof and takes a great pic. Even 8x10's are sharp and clear. I've also used Nikon's which are nice cameras. Olympus is also good. I would suggest staying away from Kodak. We have some at work and they are just lousy. I've also talked to several people who have the same opinion. Just my $.02 worth.

Re: OT: Canon A60 fans line up here. in reply to e, 12-21-2004 12:45:11
I asked my son that. He sells cameras for a living. He said two years ago the best bang for the buck was the Canon A60. It's much easier on batteries than the A40 or the later A80. Most people don't use more than 2meg pictures because they take too long to send on-line. My A60 has made one trip back to the factory without charge -- grit in the telephoto lens.

My son gave me an underwater case for the unit, good to 130' down. It has taken many pictures above and below the water, and done the work for one high-school yearbook.

Charlie rates Sony's colour best, followed by Canon, and then the others in order of price.

Mind you, he uses a Leica medium format with no electronic parts whatever.

Got a Kodak easyshare, no printer dock, that is next, I am not interested in porttrait quality pictures, 3.1 megapixels, does a great job, $149.95 at Best Buy. The impressive part, even a dummy like me can get pictrues taken and on the computor, or in the expansion slot on the printer. I do not know anout their cameras, but Sony is not high on my personal quality chart for TVs, radios, and such.

Camera depends on what each individual wants. www.dpreview.com is the place to go My best and made for an outdoor type with wildlife: is nothing to beat an Olympus 2100uz. 10 power with an internal gyroscope to stabilize. Out of production, but availale on E-bay.

Not being a full-blown Yuppie, I can't remember the model designation, but the Olympus I have sure is a nice, simple camera. And the software that comes with it is VERY user friendly (Cam-Media)

All the bells and whistles at a reasonable price. John
