OT---can I convert my wood stove to a pellet stove

Is this possible? I have a small woodstove that won"t really hold enough wood to hold overnight (even though I go to be at 11:30 and get up at 5 am. Does anyone make a kit to convert this into a pellet stove? I guess all I would need is a hopper, and some way to move the pelletts into the stove....but I am not sure how that would work. Looks aren"t too vital...it"s in the basement. I appreciate your thoughts.

As the others say, a pellet stove needs to meter air & pellets into the cumbustion pot just so.

No practical way to convert, need to start over.

Honestly, most woodstoves won't hold enough wood to burn overnight, and equally honestly, you really don't want to burn that way anyhow. You'd have to smolder all night long, with a cold chimney, and all the creosote buildup that comes with it. There's no better way to set up chimney fires then trying to smolder through the night.

The closest you can generally come, with some semblence of safety, is a good pile of coals, well banked. Come morning you may still have some good sized embers and be able to reset a fire quickly.

I know of no kit to convert to pellets, or any reasonable way to do it yourself. A pellet stove is an entirely different unit from a woodstove. total replacement of the woodstove with a pellet stove is the only method I know of.

Amen. These people with black smouldering chemical distillation factories they call as wood stove are dangerous. About the best anyone can do it toss in a round unsplit block(s) of elm,maple etc and let it burn bright and clean. The next morning a good bed of coals can be raked up to get a rapid start. The hot coals have kept the stove and chimney warm for draft and should be good to go with some small dry wood. Most of us are now old enough we have to get up in the middle of the night to take a wee anyways. May as well stoke the stove while up and about. As for a new stove. Something from Harman, Hitzer, Ground Hog or Newmatic that has coal burning capability is a smart move. Prices for all other fuels is on the way up. Coal will always be abundant and cheap.

FWIW;
I have a Fisher PapaBear wood stove that I've been using for over 10 years. Its vented with 6" Duravent. I burn about 5 cords/yr and keep a fire burning all night- usually about 9 to 10 hours. I inspect the chimney about once a month and brush it down usually twice/season. Works for me. Honestly.

I have a Riteway stove. It burns all night and keeps my 1200 sq ft shop warm all night. Some of these Montana nights get pretty cool. I clean the chimney each Spring. No problems. I use three cords per year. Sometimes less.

Roger: I can vouch for that--my folks have the exact same stove and have done the same thing for 25 years. They cut their own wood, and make sure to have a stock of "overnighters"--large chunks for burning all night. With proper banking, you can easily have enough fire the next morning to be able to throw on some small wood and be going again in no time. They clean the chimney a couple of times during the winter, and have never had creosote buildup worth mentioning. I would think this would make much more sense than trying to convert a wood stove to a pellet stove.

You may just need to find a different kind of wood to stoke it up with overnight. Up until just a few years ago I heated my house solely with a wood burning stove. I always made sure I had some osage orange (commonly reffered to as hedge). One or two chunks of that in the stove when you go to bed should last through the night.

When I sold wood,I had a lady that had the same problem you are having. She got some coal to use to "hold" overnight.

Burning pellets is a different deal then firewood. You have a fan pushing air in to burning chamber to creat enough combution to burn pellets. I bought a corn burning stove this fall and really like it. The pellets are expensive compared to corn. Pellets are clean burning but are expensive to buy in comparison to corn. There is a lot of stoves made to burn pellets out there and probably quite a few used ones you could buy cheap because they won't burn corn and the owners want to burn corn because corn is half the price of pellets.

I had heard about these corn burners and thought it was a good idea. It makes you want to cry when corn is chearer to BURN! I saw one last year and it works very well. Take a look and Pray for our farmers! Jeffcat
