Any of you out there have Ford's new 6.0 turbo diesel and if so what kind of milage do you get? Thanks.

Thanks to all that replied. Maybe one day I'll get one of these beasts. Maybe, by the time I can afford it they will have all the bugs worked out. Or maybe they will have stopped making them and all you'll be able to buy is an electric truck. (sigh)

BY THE WAY HAVE DROVE 7.3 FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS. LAST TRUCK WAS F-250 WITH AUTOMATIC. MISS IT. 6.0 IS GREAT TO RUN DOWN THE HIGHWAY BUT JUST WON'T IDLE AROUND LIKE THE OLE 7.3 WOULD. SEEM TO HAVE TO BUILD A LOT MORE RPM BEFORE SHE WANTS TO MOVE, ESPECIALLY IN SOFT GROUND

Ihave a 2004 with 12000 miles on it,on a vacation trip from Pa to Id and back last july we had a 19.5 average (4800 miles) at home short trips 16 to 18 mpg(2500 miles) pulling a trailer 12000 to 16000 lps 10 mpg(5000 miles) with only PRAISE about my truck, my wifes 2002 7.3 gets about 1 mpg less local and hiway and the same pulling a trailer,BUT IT WOULD NOT EVIN COME CLOSE TO HAVING THE SAME POWER, loded or empty.

Hi dieselrider,

Unless you've been reading mileage threads for the past 3 yrs or so what you will learn will be useless. Why?

Two years ago when diesel was $1.25gal average you found it was hard to find people who would talk fuel mileage. The people who would report mileage were called liers as they reported 20mpg or so, while the name callers were getting 15mpg.

Now that diesel is $2gal those same name callers are reporting 20mpg plus at 75mph. Of course this can't happen on a stock truck.

After several years of reading fuel mileage threads, if you drive like you have a egg under the fuel pedal and drive 55mph tops then you can get 22mpg pretty easy on a DRW with #2D. A little higher on SRW.

60mph= 21mpg
65mph= 19mpg
70mph= 18mpg

Above 2000rpm mileage drops considerable. Jack rabbit starts is a fuel mileage killer to any DBW (drive by wire) fuel system.

Alot of people report fuel mileage from the overhead puter, not hand calculated. Huge errors here as the puter never reads correct. Want to get 99mpg? Start at the top of a grade reset the puter then descend the grade without touching the fuel pedal then just as you reach the bottom add a little fuel then look at the puter read out, instant 99mpg.

Bone, I"ll give him anutter honest milage report. I have had Ford diesel pick ups since Ford has made them and manage a fleet of them so I know the BSers from real life when talkin milage excepting, of course, those with magic chips, magic throttle feet, and of coure those who got the magic engines. The 6.0 is 1-2 better MPG than the 7.3 it replaced which got 1-2 worse MPG than the original PS or the mechanicaly injected non-turbo 7.3. Our fleet average here is running 17 MPG on the 6.0 and the original non-intercooled 7.3PS and the few 7.3 Non turbos still in our fleet. The intercooled 7.3 PS is going 15.5 Individual best milages come from those who run empty most of the time and drive slower, (amazing fact eh?) worst from those who are loaded and drive like H---. For the 6.0 and others lumped together above the best individual MPG is right at 19, worst at 16. For the intercooled 7.3 best is going 18 worst is under 15. These figures come from our F-250s, all 2 wheel drive wth untility beds. some loaded, some not. My personal ride is an 02 F-350 dually 4WD 4.10 gear. I drive it sanely but tow a lot. Best empty mi;age ever recorded was 17.1. Most of the time 16.5. Step up to 70 MPG on a long empty drive and mailage goes down to 15 or so. Pulling 20 goosmenck lowboy trailer I get 13 at 55 empty or loaded makes little differance and goes down fast from there.

Hi Butch,

YA, but I'm glad I bought the 7.3 as the 6.0 still has a few bugs to work out. There's rumors of a 6.4 diesel in 2007. I wonder what blunder Ford will make this time.

I have the 02 F350 DRW CC lwb 4wd 6spd 3:73 and is probably why I get great fuel mileage. I told myself I would be happy with 20mpg empty and 12mpg pulling and so far I have not been disappointed.

My 15k mile life time fuel milage that includes 6k miles of pulling 16k GCW is 17.1mpg. I'm all similes with this mileage.

Yes, I like the manners of the 7.3 better myself. The 6.0 will win a stoplight drag and does pull a tad better abit the higher RPMs needed to do it. We have several trouble free 6.0s at over 100K and several trouble makers that refuse to be "fixed" with wierd things going on continualy. I do like the quiet cab with the 6.0. If Ford would fix the automatic woes (jury is still out on the lastest fix) I could be happy ever after with an intercooled 7.3 DIT, automatic, 3.73 gears and the XLT non-larriet cab. We have yet to completely wear out a 6.9 or any of the 7.3s in all the years we have run them. They get a few more rattles at 300K but we have never run any over 400K only because the rest of the vehicle needs replaced before the motor. May run run out sometime for giggles if I can find someone who will drive it, LOL.

Hi Butch,

Have you comparred the 6.0 PCM codes of the ones that run good to the ones that give you trouble?

Curious if it's a programing glitch?

What kind of repairs are you doing on the average with the ones using the 7.3? How about on the drive train?

I don't trade vehicles very often (last time it was 27yrs) and I'm building a parts list on my 02.

The troublemaker 6.0s are stil being fixed under warrenty but that don"t get the guy to the job and back. When I have time I"ll get into the codes and give you a shout. After the first few 99s the 7.3 DIT intercooled engine problems have been very few and scattered as to the exact problem. We still keep a cam position senser on hand at all times along with a water pump. This comes from a barrage of those problems with the 94-97 DITs and the first few intercooled trucks. Those problems are pretty rare now. My biggest complaint on the trucks is the transmissions. We are 95% automatic and neither the auto or the sticks are as reliable as they should be in my limited opinion. Automatics go 50- 70K and go with a bang. Sticks give cheaper problems but a whole lot more of them. Clutch cylinders, pressure plates and disks have been put in all of our stick trucks. You must realize that these trucks are driven a long ways to work, run through the job during the day and then a long ways home, most of tyhe time with a jag of something in the bed. Our average milage is right at 65K per year. Also remember that although I have a bunch of good guys working for me they dont own the trucks. In defence of them i do own mine and my milage, repairs etc pretty well match the fleet.

Hey T_Bone,
I have a 2000 PS, in the last 3 months, I have put the water pump, bearing/seal leak, the glow plug solenoid, and the cam position sensor, I have had my truck 2 years, had 45,000 when I got it, now has 90,000. I have also put a rear end input shaft seal in it, and the fuel filter housing, had a sensor in it that was not a replaceable part by itself, and glow plugs would not work, so would not start. Other than that, it has been a good truck.

been meaning to tell you what happened to me.

driving home from work our crewcab srw 7.3 died.
i figured it was a jammed fuel filter. i bleed the thing out. it fired right up. drove another 2 miles and it died again.

needed a new ecu ( i think thats what it's called)
because a 60 hp. chip that the previous owner installed went bad and shorted through the ecu.

they put in a new ecu and the truck dont have quite the same power, but much better mileage.
i try to keep it in the torque range that you mentioned a few months ago and have seen an improvement of about 3 mpg.

another thing, the truck was real jumpy with the chip in it. now it is much smoother at take off.

Hi mud,

Maybe the CPS ? About $85 to $150 part only

PCM about $500 part only.

Thats the bad thing with a PCM replacement as Ford will only load the last known good EPA program. Ford will not load the original program.

Mine is a AEB2 code and gets better mileage than some of the latter programs in 2003.

Glad to see the max torque RPM is working out for you. 3mpg is a huge increase.

Hi Roy,

I'm S of Phoenix and u ?

I drive by maximum torque rpm or 1600rpm on the 7.3. I use a light fuel pedal only addding enough fuel to match tach rpm rise with speed rise.

Empty, or as empty as I get, I shift about 1250rpm for each gear. I don't exceed 1600rpm in OD.

Pulling grades with 16k GCW, I use 1600rpm max. If I down shift, I return to 1600rpm. The last trip out I found that 1750rpm works best over using 1600rpm while pulling grades. I think at 1750rpm alittle more boost is added, I don't have a boost gauge. I still averaged 14.1mpg pulling this load so the slight increase in rpm didn't bother fuel mileage.

On up shift on grades, I use 2000rpm maximum if needed, like topping out. On lesser grades 1600rpm works well or 1750rpm works well depending on the precent of grade.

Thanks and best Holidays to you!

Hey T-Bone,
I am an honest diesel driver, my F250 SRW 2WD, 7.3 gets anywhere from 12-13 pulling a 7000# trailer. Empty, most fo the time, it gets 15-16 driving around home and to work 10-15 mile trips. Now, if I do the long haul thing, I can get 18-20mpg. I am not sure what gears I have in the rear end, but it never lacks for power when I need it.

Hi Jim,

Ya I should of said on the diesel forums is where you'll see the mileage all over the place. People here are of a different class and you don't see alot BS'ing.

On a 3800 mile RT trip from AZ to CO, I averaged 14.1mpg pulling 16k GCW. I pull by maximum torque rpm or 1600rpm on my 7.3.

Here in AZ going from 1800ft to 9000ft RT, I averaged 16.5mpg on 1100 miles pulling the same 16k GCW. AZ doesn't have the long grades like CO does so I get better fuel mileage.

I went back and looked at my fuel cost for my gasser, $2385yr and the same miles on my PSD was $785 for the year. Thats when fuel was in the $1.25gal area.

No comparrison on pulling tho. The gasser I was at 25mph on the grades max and at 42mph with the PSD with more power to spare. I drive for best fuel mileage so I don't pull the grades at 55mph with the PSD but I surley could.

Hi Jim,

My son bought a 04.5 CTD-600, CC, 4wd, 6spd, 4:10 and that is one quite engine. My 7.3 PSD is quiter than most and the CTD is 1/3 less noise of my PSD.

The NV6spd shifts smoother than my ZF6spd with 1/2 the shift throw.

Had the 02 Dodges been like the 04.5, I would have owned a Dodge today.

I wouldn't touch a 05 Ford until the new suspension proves it's self as well as the 6.0 blunder.

Chevy is just plain over priced.

To me Dodge is the best bang for the buck in 2005.

I like my F350 as it's fitted with all I wanted other than not having a CTD.

I have been reading this whole discussion with a lot of interest because I am in the market for a diesel truck. the problem I have is that everyone seems to have emotional attachment to Ford, GMC Chevy or Dodge... I have been impressed by the Cummins engine since Dodge sent out the press release in the early '90's. I have talked to a number of Dodge owners and most love the trucks but think the drivetrain isn't capable of handling the engine for long.

I have a few friends who have Fords and GMCs and wouldn't think of buying a dodge. My personal history with Ford trucks has been dismal and I would prefer a GM product to Ford but can't afford a truck new enough to be worth having (2001 or newer).

I guess I'm looking for info on which trucks/years/options to avoid. ie. manual or auto, years with problems known to all(other than me)so on.

not really a bias, company i work for has a deal to buy ford trucks only. cummins is a great engine, sounds better than anything else especially when straight piped. just know of too many problems with trannys, steering boxes, ect. as far as chevy goes, saw way too many of the old 6.5 sitting around with injector pumps and other engine problems. just my two cents worth.

Someone in this discussion stated that they would like to buy a Ford Truck with a Cummins Diesel. You can. You have to purchase an F-550 or above. F-350 and 450s can not be purchased with the Cummins. Ex-father-in-law loves his 6.0.
Drove with 6 horse slant aluminum trailer loaded and got 18 MPG. ???? I"ve heard more bad about the Duramax than the Ford or Cummins.
