i have an air compressor that runs off 220v it is very old..made by united states air compressor company model mk8811 serial 33550 mk cleveland ohio..the id on the pump is #42083m. theres a 1 1/2 hp motor 1740 rpm on it.. this compressor takes a long time to air up..i was wondering what motor should be on this..rpm's and what is difference between single/dual stage..and rebuild ideas if needed? This was on our farm since the 60's and we bought it used...the tank is probably 5' high by 3' around..don't know gallons...any help appreciated..

had one like yours that I ran for 15 years. I installed a bigger pulley on the motor and I mean a biggn. 8 or bigger pulley all I could put on it.. I rebuilt it one time and got the parts from a oil & equipment outfit in Charlotte NC. Cant remember the name. All the parts at that time were available sept the valves. This was in 1995. Some were around 1999 a valve broke and I sentem the head. The problem was I could not get the valves out of the head. He said he would try and the last I talked toem he had not gotem out either but had located the valves. I gave the tank to somebody to use for extra storage a few years ago and it has never came back home. Try installn a larger pulley on the motor. You realy have nuttin to loose.I

Those old compressors ran quite slow, so a 1740 RPM motor with a small pulley driving quite a large pulley on the compressor would be normal.

Two stage means that the air is first compressed in a fairly large cylinder, and then forced out of the large cylinder, usually through a cooler (typically a length of pipe with cooling fins), into the smaller second stage cylinder, where it's compressor further, to the output pressure, and routed to the tank, sometimes through another cooler. (And, of course, a check valve.)

Each cylinder will have an inlet and outlet valve.

Sometimes these are a flat disc held shut by a coiled spring made of light spring wire, and sometimes the valves are a flat steel reed.

In any case, a chunk of dirt, or just built-up crud can hold a valve open, either type of valve spring can break, or the valve itself can crack or break.

Some compressors have screw-in plugs over the valves, allowing easy access, and others require head removal for valve access.

Check your's out, and remove the valve plugs, or the cylinder head, and check the valves for dirt, wear, or damage.

If you have to remove the cylinder head, do it carefully, and you may be able to salvage the original gasket and re-use it.

More rarely, poor compressor performance may be caused by bad piston rings, a damaged cylinder or piston, or a broken connecting rod.

Before taking anything apart, make sure the tank is fully discharged of air pressure, so there's no chance of a surprise balst of compressed air in your face, or flying parts when they're loosened!

thanks for prompt response..your description matches what i have...i was in menards and asked the "expert" in that department how you tell what two stage is and he told me you can tell by looking at the motor, and whether it is 110 or 220..i figured that wasn't the right answer...

would it wreck my compressor, or is there an advantage to going with a 3450 rpm/bigger hp motor...i would like to have more "air time" between compressor recharge....(compressor can't keep up)

Speeding up the pump, trying to get more air out of it, is like trying to use your pickup to haul tons of dirt each day. It will do it, but won't last long. Better off to get something that will do what you need. If the compressor is all original, adding a larger or faster motor will not get you much more air, and the pump will soon give out. If the motor has been replaced and is now undersized, you could restore it to original hp motor and improve your performance.

If you have a two stage unit, the cylinders will not be of the same size, you can see a noticable difference in the size of one cylinder vs the other. Single stage units will have identically sized cylinders. This is just from looking at the outside you can see this. Two stage units also usually have a section of tubing with fins, or a cooler of some sort, cooling the air as it comes from the smaller cylinder and before entering the larger cylinder.

I can't tell you the amount of speed increase the unit you have may tolerate. The old compressors were prety much designed as QUIET, slow-speed units compared to what's on the market now.

It would be interesting to know the CFM's it's putting out, compared to original spec's, so you could tell if is working as it should, or needs a "tuneup".
