OT 20# Propane Tank

I acquired a 20 lb propane tank, real cheap. I think it's an old one, i.e. it doesn't have an OPD. Is it scrap metal or can I put it to work?

Hi Dave
This worked for me Write "Weed Burner
Only" on the tank.Or Snow deicer?.
The new valves will not run the flame
burner.They should fill it. hazfun

How did you get the old valves out. I've tried a couple of times on some old ones and couldn't get them to budge.

Thanks for posting that site. I didn't know valves could be purchased so reasonably.

Thanks to the others that told about the old bottle exchange at Lowes too.

I have one OPD bottle and 3 older ones, however I fill them myself. $4.50 beats $8 or $12 or $???

I have a larger tank with a liquid valve in it I use it to fill my little tanks.

You could always drain it remove the valve and plumb it up for a portable air tank.

Use the gas that's in it; depending on your relationship with your supplier, you may can still get it refilled. Don't quote regulations or flame me, guys; had one filled last week..... $12 bucks at my local dealer.

I had heard a year ago that Menards was doing this but could never find the deal.
Based on the post below, I just called my local Lowes and , shor 'nuf. 14 bucks for exchange full tank, even for an old valved tank!
Apparentl it's Blue Rhino that's doing it. Not a special, ongoing thing.

The threads are the same use any thing on it. I have amish gas service that changes valves for $8.00 plus being cheaper on gas prices. Walmart also trades tanks.

just this morning I made a trip to Lowes with two old style propane tanks... 20 years old !!

for 14.00 each I got two new style full of gas.. a new tank will cost you aroun 30 bucks empty... look for the Blue Rhino cage at Lowes, hardware, quickmarts, walmart... there everywhere..your price may vary, but 29 bucks later I'm ready with 40 # of gas...

Actually, Blue Rhino puts only 17# of gas in a 20# cylinder. You could weigh it when full and again when it is empty. Propane containers cannot be filled 100%. My supplier fills my 330 gallon tank to about 80% full. The one thing I do not know is whether the 20# is absolute maximum capacity or is the allowable fill capacity. I don't know if Blue Rhino is filling as much as (legally and safely) possible or is short filling to boost profits.

If I remember correctly, 20 pounders before the OPD were filled using the TARE weight plus 80% of 20lbs.

For a brief period, tanks could be certified and you got by without the OPD. Now, legally, they all have to have the OPD.

Blue Rhino was acquired by Ferrell last year I think.

Around my parts if it doesn't have the OPD it's scrap..... ..... ..... .....till you go to your gas dealer and for bout $18 get one installed. If the tank is real old, there may also be a pressure check required like you have on your gas welding bottles, but I'm not sure.
