I know, I oughta have a manual but has anybody had an 036 apart to repair the oiler and can give basic instructions to get at the pump? I a not mecanicaly illiterate but I dont want to start tearing it apart fromt he wrong end either. Problem is a slow, over time loss of oiling volume. Now have adjustment wide open and as far as I can tell only a small amount of oil is pumped and only when motor is realy wound up. Have all ready checked the easy things like the suction strainer and for plugged holes in the bar. Thanks.

Butch,
I know this is gonna sound crazy, but I had a customr one time that kept bringing their 036 in saying it was pumping slow, we went throught it, put bar oil in and it would pump fine, customer would taek out, a week later, same thing, we would check oiler, all was good, dump out oil, check lines, put oil in and it would pump fine. Well, to make a long story short, the Stihl rep happened to come in one day and we said something to him. He asked if they were using Stihl bar oil, well it was a cheap red bar oil kinda runny, so we told him no, it was something, we did not know, said that was problem, Stihl oilers are made to run and pump with the viscosity of Stihl bar oil and nothing else will work unless it is the same viscosity of Stihl oil. I still did not buy it, but we told cusomter that, and they never did come back with the problem again after they started using Stihl bar oil. So it might be something to look at. The reason I say this is because when I did sell Stihl, we never repalced oil pumps. Now the little wire that runs the gear on crank, we did replace a few of them, they would break off and not pump oil very well.

Is the vent open on the oil reservoir and the suction hose free of cracks, cuts, and collapsed sections?

What happens at the oil pump discharge port when you run it without a bar and chain? Does oil squirt out?

The hose in the tank seems limber and OK. With the bar off it has to run for several mintutes before any oil comes out the hole you mentioned. Is the pump behind the clutch? Thanks.

And should have mentioned that very little oil comes out when it does start coming out.

First, clean the oil tank thoroughly and try it. If no better, time to dive in.
You must remove the sprocket drum and clutch. Underneath is the pump and drive worm. Check the tang on the worm. It must be tight on the plastic worm, and the tang must be long enough to engage the clutch drum. The plastic worm teeth must show no wear.
2 screws will remove the pump. Check the gear, it must spin freely. The inlet must be clean. Check the intake hose for dirt, clean it. Reassemble and try it.
If all else fails, get a new pump. BUT, I replace very few, most problems are dirt and worm drive. Check the vent also.
