Tabletop Bandsaw advice

Lady in my office asked me for advice on buying a tabletop bandsaw for her husband. He told her he wanted one. She is concerned because it *must* be able to cut sheet metal or else it has no benefit. There's not enough room for him to have a standalone, so it must be table-top. She is looking at one by Sears and is going to look at Home Despot as well.

Any recommendations? Any warnings about what to stay away from?

thanks!
Tom A

A lot depends upon the metal. A regular wood-cutting blade in a band saw can handle aluminum without modification. ABS and plexiglass are very tough on blades, but mild aluminum isn't.

Steel, I'm sure, is another matter.

In addition to the cutting speed another thing to take into consideration is that most table top models are 3 wheeled bandsaws & they tend to cause more significant blade breakage than 2 wheeled bandsaws especially when cutting metal . The manufacturers that I buy bands from won't warrentee their bands on a 3 wheeled bandsaw.

Don't know where you live but a few years ago I bought a bandsaw and then after assembling it, I read through the manual and found out that it should only be operated at or above a certain temperature in the shop. I didn't know that before and I would have been using it in my backyard shop which often (for quick cutting jobs) I don't heat the shop up. Obviously it had something to do with the blade running on a COLD rubber pulley liner. I took it back for that single reason, still wish I had one occasionally but it was not what I was after for winter time use.

Several years ago I got a craftsman. Specified that with the speed changer pulley, it would be OK for metal. But with proper type blade. This is a stand alone, but I am sure they make the same thing in a tabletop. Well pleased with it now for probably 15 years or so. I think their saws are now made by Rigid, mine was made by emerson.

The blade speed for wood is much faster than that for steel. Few table top saws have the slow blade speed.

Metal cutting blade speeds are in the range of 100 to 200 feet per minute, wood speeds ten times that fast.

Needs fine tooth blades often for thin steel also.

Cutting metal is a lot more difficult than cutting wood. I would look and see if Delta or one of the name brands has one they suggest is OK for metal.

I have been happy with Woodworker"s Supply. They have a great website and a wide selection of saws.

i was not really happy with the craftsman because the blade seemed to come off track and when i tried to fix it i realized it was an occsional user quality saw, same with the one at home depot. i got a good one from enco and its been great.you can get a catolog from them use-enco.com or call 800-use-enco . msc supply also has some good ones. lucass
