I have a Ford F250 SD pick up with the PSD and 6 speed manual transmission. When the engine is running, I cannot shift it into any gear. With the engine off, it shifts into any gear OK, no unusual effort. Is it time for a new clutch? Does anyone make a better clutch than the OEM one? Thanks in advance for any help with this!

We had to change the master/slave cylinder on our 2001 F350 at about 60K miles. Clutch pedal would go to the floor but it wouldn't disengage the pressure plate off the clutch. Ford sells a complete kit, which includes the little reservoir and lines and linkage components, I think it was about $150, maybe a little more or less. Most of the kit is plastic. Biggest problem I had was trying to figure out the firewall retaining method. If I remember right, it's like a push-in and twist lock arrangement and it might have a snap ring of some sort. Pedal pressure was noticably lighter when this started to happen, but it all happened in one day. Noticed I had to pump the pedal a few times to get the clutch to work and then, no clutch release at all. Check that out first and also make sure the little reservoir is full--I think someone else posted the mention of a possible leak. Check that first before you go changing the clutch itself.

Kevin (and others),
Thank you for the answer on the master/slave cylinder assembly, it sounds to be a likely suspect. Did you have to remove the transmission to do the changeout, or was it reasonably accessable without doing so? I don't have a lift and have to do work like this while lying under the truck so dropping the transmission is out of the question, I will have to take it somewhere.

No lift needed--I had to do ours in a grocery store parking lot, in the rain. A few minor tools and if I remember correctly I had to buy a snap ring pliers set at the local parts house (was out of town when this happened) to remove the snap ring at the firewall. Get to the Ford dealer and let them show you this expensive plastic. If you want to verify the cylinder assembly is the problem, have someone push the clutch pedal in while your watching the clutch fork--see if it moves or not.

hi i had a weird clutch problem on my truck i have an 87 350w with a diesel had the same symptoms you did every one said it was the clutch i figured i would try the masterand slave cylinders cheaper than a clutch upon inspection i realized the bushing wore out on the pushrod and both the pin and the pushrod wore oblong so the pushrod wasnt fully disengaging the clutch couldnt get it in gear running. made a new rod and pin on the lathe shifts like new. dont know how many miles you have on your truck but check for ha ha's could be a simple fix

Hi GPWT,

Sounds like you have more than just a clutch problem. The master/slave sure don't have to leak but very little to quit working. When I bought the 02 F350 my master was leaking on push rod seal, 500 miles. Less than a tsp of fluid leaked and I missed gears and hard to shift at times.

I thought I'd have to be retrained coming from a 4spd to the 6spd...lol Glad it wasn't me!

You didn't say what year, but the 99 had a real bad clutch disc that would loose spring(s) then take out the input shaft.

In 02 Ford changed suppliers to Luk.

Southbend clutch makes a heavy duty clutch like the semi's use, paddle wheel design and rated at 1000ft/lbs ? The best rating in the industry for a PSD. They also use a Kelvar pilot bushing.

I also seen Eaton makes a clutch rated close to the Southbend.

I never could find a rating on the Luk clutch. I only have 17k miles on mine so I can't help with how long it'll last.

I have had that same issue twice and it was the slave cylinder both times, doesnt stoke enough to fully dissengage the clutch, so its hard to get in gear with engine running, engine off and it glides like silk. Look at the slave ..

I hate to brake your heart but this is a common problem with the that engine/tranny combo. Mine did the same thing. Bet your gonna have to do a clutch job. This isn't that difficult if you have a transmision jack but its pricy. If I remember right it was abut $750 for the clutch-presure plate-trowout bearing.

Pretty much what he told me. Two months after I replaced the clutch I had to replace the main fork shaft in the transfer case for one that had lube hole in it. now I got that puppy pretty well set up.

Not sure exactly what setup you have, must be sosme type of hydraulic clutch. Make sure that the mater and slave cylinders are OK and it's full of fluid before tearing into the clutch.

Just went thru this. Ring around the springs on the clutch disc failed putting finger sized piece of metal on pressure plate.Dealer said too bad ,bend over. Haven't bugged ford bout it yet. 60K on 6 sp with 4.10. Tow a stock trlr alot. Over the hot rod stage long time ago. Ended up with AMS clutch. Has 6 springs instead of 3 on clutch disc. was talked out of ceramic clutch as I haul horses alot & need to slip clutch for horses comfort at times.
